All I was really trying to say is that Joe has had a hard time at retail since at least ROC, and was prior to that enjoying a resurgence due mostly to collector good will, but still didn't have a true 'direction' (as appears to be what they are doing now). In other words, the brand is just now getting its ducks in a row as to how to tackle a strategy, which is what it's been lacking literally for years. As to how effective that will prove to be who knows, but it's the first time in a long time that they've attempted to do something 'new' with it.
But I do agree in the lack of direction, which is the biggest thing I hope is addressed in the coming year. I think the past 6 years have basically given Hasbro more than enough information to know that movies, alone, are NOT going to rejuvenate the brand, nor are direct collector oriented products. Over that same period, TMNT came out and blew everyone out of the water by making a real, honest to god, KIDS' TOY LINE, and is raking in the money. Quote:

Again, I want to point to the over 18 month development cycle Hasbro took when they revamped Transformers with Armada in 2002. Product was less disrupted because they could quickly import Takara's Car robots line as filler while work was done on that line, where as GI Joe doesn't really have that option. If Hasbro is going to do anything significant with Joe, I think we will start seeing the results of that next year.

As anecdotal evidence; I recall pegs at both Target and Wal-mart literally jammed full of ROC product and this was throughout the movies summer long run. Doesn't mean zero product sold and that pegs weren't emptying and then re-filling, but to my eyes it certainly didn't seem like the line was moving as well as other summer movie product. Anyway, again I'm just glad that Joe has a line manager again and that they have plans to do something with it- regardless of scale or theme. |

Are they working on a new cartoon for G.I. Joe? I just don't know why we can't get a decent cartoon to carry the toyline? Without it, we'll continually see a new assortment of Joe product in which the first two waves gets distributed decently everywhere and the last two - four waves can only be found online or at some TRU stores.

It was a direct quote from a Hasbro rep; from an interview where he was called out to hypothesize as to why the ROC line under sold. Sorry, I don't have a link to it. The interview itself has been lost to the ages, but I do recall them mentioning this as part of the reason for its lack of success.
So if the line failed because it was too expensive...why did retailers just charge, practically, the same price for the next line? I wasn't questioning you or anything, I've been asking that same question for YEARS :p

Just release everything from the concept vault and maybe a few extras.
Seriously, why act like they are interested in the brand while continually, Hasbro gives G.I. Joe the short end of the stick while dedicating uber amounts of resources to Transformers and Star Wars for the last eight years? I can't be that hard, every other established line has a presence in retail year round except for G.I. Joe. So yeah it is mostly their fault. No Movie, no toys on the shelves. Remember how quickly Walmart & Target clearance Retaliation before it was even released on DVD? Quote:

The problem is that G.I. Joe is now a Movie toyline.
No Movie, no toys on the shelves. Remember how quickly Walmart & Target clearance Retaliation before it was even released on DVD? What's the point of making a new cartoon, when it will get canned as soon as another Movie is mentioned. Hasbro should just focus on a cartoon and stop wasting time with Paramount. G.I. Joe well never have a huge movie cashcow like Transformers (and upcoming Star Wars). Even if they do a cartoon that last more than two seasons, doesn't mean Joe toy sales will skyrocket.

So the bigger question at hand is what will give Joes consistency and longevity in retail? I seriously believe one or two well thought out animated series and maybe some animated films would serve a toyline better than some disjointed film franchise that comes out every three to four years. Again, it can't be that hard to link a successful cartoon series up with a series of highly detailed figures that appeals to newcomers and existing fans alike.

I think it's fair to say that Hasbro isn't going to care about what's happening in G.I. Joe comics and make toys based on those story lines until the comics are being published by Marvel. Just a hunch looking at my Retaliation Kwinn action figure. It's a movie toy line now, and it's making me sad.
I'm thinking a next stage evolution for G.I. Joe will require letting ARAH die with a failed movie, and then taking like a six-year break to develop new entertainment media. Think the 1976-1982 gap between the last of the Adventure Team offerings and the intro of ARAH Original 13. Hasbro went Hollywood, why not take the time to develop a GOOD video game through their partners at EA, Activision or THQ? |
