Perhaps I'm misunderstanding what you mean, but these guys aren't single individuals. No one nominated "Cobra Trooper #7" or "Joe Smith the Alley Viper". They just said Cobra Trooper which to me means you're counting the entire collective and not an individual.
To me it's similar to voting for Night Force as the greatest Joe character. Night Force isn't a character, it's a group of people. Within that group there may be individuals (Falcon, Muskrat, etc) but Night Force is not a individual character and there is no "singular" character named Night Force. Same with Cobra Troopers. Now maybe there are individuals within that group that distinguish themselves, like Scarface, or a specific Fred from the Crimson Guards, but just like with my Night Force example there is a difference between voting for Falcon (an individual member of Night Force) as one of the greatest Joe characters and voting for Night Force (a group) as one of the greatest Joe characters. This difference is even more apparent in the case of Cobra teams/units. At least on the Joe side the specific members of that team are known individuals, but with but a few exceptions, all the Cobra army builders have very few individual characters within their groups.

Ripcord add Gen Flagg.
Getting close to the top 50! I can't believe you've gone this far. I really appreciate these. Makes my day. I'm never going to try and tell someone who to vote for, although I will openly disagree with some choices. But As far as nameless characters go i can see how they get personified as individuals. I only ever had one BAT when I still played with the figures. 1985 was an awesome year for Cobra Figures. I had one of each and they sort of took on characters of their own. The were all bad asses in my mind. My one Snow Serpent took a lot to take down. He was way cooler than my Breaker figure.

I can't agree with the comparison of B.A.T.S. or Cobra Soldiers to Night Force. B.A.T.S. are a single design and concept. Night Force all have an individual look as well as individual names.
Why should a figure not be a valid choice as a favorite character just because there are multiples of them? If multiple T-800s, Aliens or Predators showed up in those original movies, would that have meant they could no longer be anyone's favorite character, villain or monster? The troops may not exhibit as many character traits as some named characters, but they are distinguishable from each other in some ways, especially the B.A.T.S., whose uniqueness is why they are poised to be the first troop to place in the poll. Some people have favorite characters just because they look cool. Hit & Run is a figure that was never developed much as a character but is in the running because he looks cool. The same can be said for a lot of the troop builders. |

The same can be said for a lot of the troop builders. Wade Collins is a great character. He was also a member of the Crimson Guard. Had he simply stayed a nameless faceless Crimson Guard member in my opinion he wouldn't have been a great character. That's a big part of the difference to me. A great character doesn't lack distinction from those around him, but rather has something that makes him unique. He steps forward as an individual and distinguishes himself (or herself) from the masses. In this example Wade Collins is the individual and the Crimson Guard are the masses (and I would vote for Wade Collins). There are other examples: Mercer from the Vipers, Scareface from the Officers, that female Stratoviper from that Sunbow episode. All of these became stronger characters by distinguishing themselves from the group. Ditto with Shipwreck and the Navy. Shipwreck is a great Joe character because he isn't just another faceless sailer in the Joe verse but a unique character who is more defined than the grouping he happens to be part of. I would vote for Shipwreck for great character but not for Navy. If you notice in your movie examples even though there may have been multiples of that species there was also an individual that distinguished itself from the group either through character or by action. It is that individual (even if it went unnamed) that impacted us as an audience and for the most part it is because of that individual Predator, Terminator, etc that we would actually be labeling them as great characters not the faceless group of them in the background. But again this is all just my opinion and I hope in discussing/debating it you don't think I'm disregarding yours or that I'm trying to dictate who you should be allowed to vote for.

the aliens aren't characters in my opinion. they're simply monsters. no matter how many you have.
the Arnie Terminators however are all seperate individuals as they all act differently. the T-800 in T2 is different to the T-850 in T3 even if visually they're identical. |

Gotta say, Indy, Inspector, Jedi, Loose Cannon, and several others, you guys have made these poll fun for me because with all of the on-going debating and different POV's you guys have all kept it civil and classy. If you were to put all of these threads together, we would be over 200 pages I'd bet, and I haven't seen a single personal attack yet. And even the few times someone has tried to be an antagonistic troll, no one has taken the bait. Just wanted to say thanks to all you guys (and/or gals),
