Like a number of other people, I took advantage of the Dr. Dreadful tube things on clearance at Toys R Us. Ended up getting a handful, and to be honest, with how these are already coming out, I'd like some more.
First up, my first trial. Started with 3 round white LEDs from the bottom. Was ok at first, but when testing in the dark, I wasn't happy: Kept the 3 LEDs at the bottom, and added a single one up top...a lil better: Ended up scrapping the 3 LEDs at the bottom for a couple reasons... 1: it just wasn't quite the effect I was looking for. 2: it was taking too many LEDs for such a 'simple' project. Ended up doing 1 LED in the bottom, but in the center, and 1 from the top. Had to make a conduit of sorts so you can't see the wires going to the top: Single LED at the bottom: And 1 from the top: And both: And testing...really like this effect. With how the tubes are more translucent than clear, almost looks like there could be liquid in there: And here's the start of the 2nd one, wanted to show more where they started from: Really liking how all the wiring, switch and battery can fit in the underside nicely: Will try a different type of conduit on this 2nd one. I want to basically try 2 different styles and see which one I like best in the end: The first one, I ended up using 2 square LEDs, this one, I used simpler, cheaper, round ones from a flashlight. A lil bit brighter and I think it provides just a bit nicer effect: Round LEDs on the left in the following 3 pics. The round LEDs are much easier to integrate into these: Next, I'll be working on adding details, maybe more lights for the bases to make them stand out and not look anything like what they started off as.

That's awesome!
Tbh, I'm a little ignorant about the tube things. What are they from?

I'm pretty sure these are the Dr Dreadful candy things that you cna find at Toys R Us and Michaels craft stores on clearance now. Seems they're only 99 cents at TRU even.

Super-cool customizations on these! Would love to see a lab dio full of them!
I also want to branch out into working with LEDs, but I wouldn't even know where to start... Anyone have a tutorial?

I grabbed eight of these for 60 cents a pop at a TRU with this exact idea in mind. I've never done LEDs either, so thanks for the run down.
