Snake Eyes WAS (Note: he was in the good old arah days) an interesting character in the comic, and his backstory helped link him even closer to the story. I mean, no gi joe knew Cobra Commander but snake eyes. This helped make it more emotional.
However, today he is the ninja, instead of the commando. RIP SE, you were interesting for a decade. |

I got completely and utterly sick of SE due to his overexposure and the way he was treated like a superhero with nine lives. If I were to write a G.I.Joe comic or movie, it would start with SE dying - just to get him out of the way and free up space for other more believable (and frankly more charismatic) characters.
That said I liked how he was used in a couple of stories, where he was a silent mysterious commando, but seemed a little more mortal - like in that Special Missions story arc in China and SE Asia for instance. That's the SE I like to see in action. A friend of mine who trained in theater made the observation to me (I had simply never thought of this before) that in the Joe universe, the bad guys cover their faces - even the Baroness has those thick rimmed glasses - and that's their uniform and what signifies to the reader that they're bad guys. And of the early Joes (pre Beachhead), SE, was unique in that he did exactly the same thing. He's clad in black and if you were to look at him, you'd expect him to be a bad guy. He looks more menacing than anyone in Cobra, really. And in the comic, he's portrayed as the ultimate superhero on the good guys side, but you know that he has a tremendous capability for ruthlessness and complete destruction. So it's like he taps into what makes bad guys interesting and cool, but he's on the good guys side. So he allows kids to cheer for a complete badass, because he's on the good guys side. With SE, we get to have our cake and eat it too. |

interesting about people thinking that he looks like a bad guy, in Argentina and Brazil both Snake Eyes V1 and V2 were used as villains. the V1 figure was a generic enemy trooper called the Invader. V2 was a villain in Brazil called 'Werewolf' and was the Cobra leader!

And I think Larry has spoken of the contradiction to the old ways of having the "good" guy in black and the "bad" guy (Storm Shadow) in white.

He's the epitome of the eternal warrior trained to the limits & beyond of human comprehension. This makes him a complete mystery amongst other things. Tragedy after tragedy he's does not waiver in his beliefs. He does not go completely mad or give up. He stays focused. He has hope for a better future & he does what he can within his abilities to do so.
To quote the great Funk/R&B/Soul band 'The Isley Brothers'... Dress me up for battle when all I want is peace. Those of us who pay the price come home with the least. Nation after nation, turning into beast. When will there be a harvest for the world. The only other character in fictional lore (i.e. comics/cartoons) that is comparable to SE is Batman. You can literally place there exploits side-by-side & it's the same storyline. And it's ALWAYS cool when the good guy wears black!!!

Best issue with Snake-Eyes the was issue 4: Operation Wingfield. Snake-Eyes was great up until Ninja Force. Then he started to get silly.
