Yeah, cd sales have plummeted, but music companies are making more money now than they ever did, just in a different format. In regards to them coming down on piracy, when did that happen? I know they ATTEMPTED to curb it, but as I stated before, people will find a work around. And they have. Selling songs instead of albums. Digital goods instead of material. Your attempt at a counter-example only supports the theory that I put forth and that many in the field of 3d designing and modeling already adhere to.
the argument that a $500 dollar printer not living up to your standards is proof that 3d printing is inadequate, is like saying that cas are a poor mode of transportation because you drive a used pinto. I've ordered multiple heads from shapeways and een very pleased with the results. Of course I drive a 98 corolla, so maybe my standards are low, haha. lastly, where did all the talk about 'hasbro doesn't care aout g.I.joe' go? In other threads people act like the figs they make are akin to leftoers being swept off the table for the dog. And here we're saying that a small community of collectos making their own shit under non-copywritten names will suddenly grab hasbro's attention and they'll come downon them with fines and court orders? If that's true, why haven't they gone after the casting community? everything casters sell are direct replicas of existing hasbro products. 3d printing will forr the most part be new designs, possibly copywritten by their designer. If they were going to start bringing the hammer down it would have happened already. Just watch, as people start hitting the soft areas of certain retailers/suppliers with this kinda thing, i.e ford motors car parts or parts you can buy from autozone lol, and they will find a way to kibosh it like they are already attempting to do with weapon/fire arm 3d printing. Its an easy fad to enjoy for now, but enjoy it while it lasts, its a little more controllable then the software/music thing as you can't download the printer . Casting at home is not the easiest thing in the world to do and those doing it currently haven't struck a nerve with anyone outside logo infringement at one time. But 3d printers open the door to a whole new set of copy-able products and copying of said products that hasn't garnered much attention. In fact if it wasn't for the 3d pritned gun that guy made recently, it would still be realistically beyond most peoples imaginations that any of this is truly attainble now. Especially in the legal realms. they can levy heavy taxes on it and regulate the files you download pretty easy all it takes is their decision to start controlling it before it gets to far outta hand like they did with ignoring the internet for so long, wont stop the back hand trading int he depths of the cyber black market but will curb a lot of legitmate people's sales. That starts in the courtroom though so well have to see what laws come of it. I would think it would not be unwise to copyright anything original or personal one creates in the meantime though before someone else takes it and does and then wraps it up under any sort of laws that spring out as the future unfolds.

So what about shoulder and wrists joints? And paint app too? If 3d printers can take care of this HUGE problem the maybe one day.
People are forgetting the fact that Hasbro MANUFACTURES their figures. They don't just digitally design and print them out. Maybe some paintless heads and torso etc from 3d printers.

I may have missed it, but im really surprised no one brought this up in the numerous "DEATH OF THE LINE"/"HASBRO SUCKS AND THEY OWE US" threads that permeate this board. Everyone is crying about how the line wont survive because hasbro doesnt see it as a profitable ip, but the reality is: it just doesnt matter. You've got people like faceless one, gi guppy, and others who have their feet on the ground floor of the 3d printing phenomena. and when i use the word "phenomena" it is not in hyperbole. The rapidly lowering cost and growing accessibility of 3d printing machines, along with stronger materials and the wider use of modeling programs such as cad and rhino, will revolutionize product consumption across nearly all industries. Jewelry, firearms, and yes action figures will no longer be the exclusive realm of people who own the licenses and need to sustain a business with hundreds of thousands of orders. It will be the smaller collector/craftsman community that keep these brands afloat for the people that love them.
And really, this is a great thing. The collector/consumer will be in more direct control of what is produced. Feel like commissioning a custom head for a hundred bucks? someone will probably be willing to do it. The casting community is already strong and we've got people like broken canyon (i might have name wrong) creating card backs and packaging. It'll only get better from here. Thanks OP that looks great! BB what you just described is "DEATH OF THE LINE" because if "action figures will no longer be the exclusive realm of people who own the licenses" and " Feel like commissioning a custom head for a hundred bucks? someone will probably be willing to do it. The casting community is already strong and we've got people like broken canyon (i might have name wrong) creating card backs and packaging." what motivates The Big H to pay designers and artist?(plus 100.00 for a custom head? it's already cheaper than that) now i will 100% acknowledge that there fan based businesses that do as good as or even better product. but still that would be "DEF OH DA LINE" |

if were left with the likes of shapeways, the cost is still high and the quality just isn't there yet as others have said. you just can't get the same resolution yet with the type of machines available with commercial services like shapeways.

I was looking into ways of smoothing out 3D prints and might try it out soon, I hear acetone vapor can take away some of the "roughness" of a print. I don't know if it would improve the model or not but it is good to see people devising options to make up for the limitations of 3D printing.
