Yeah, I love the weird ones. That's what made them GI Joe of the 80's. Poor Larry Hama had to work with a bunch of goofy stuff while trying to write the best comic ever. I can only imagine some artist at Marvel seeing a picture of a vehicle and thinking, "Oh, for heaven's sake!"

Yeah, the Maggots looked cool in the comic and were shown slung under the transport choppers in # 80 (that was also the issue where the Rolling Thunder was slung under the Tomahawk.) It just always seemed a little implausible to me though.

The lack of crew protection on Cobra vehicles was always an issue for me. From the Fang to the Maggot - even Cobra High Command clearly regards the rank and file as cannon fodder.

The comic also showed the Thunder Clap firing from a train, if I remember right, and obviously that wouldn't work. Just because something happened in the comic doesn't mean it was designed that way.

The trubble bubble is nothing more than a souped up jump jet pack. However, it's larger size allows for more fuel capacity. It is a small VTOL vehicle that allows for transport of multiple trubble bubbles into an area with tight air clearance, and the body and canopy offer some minimal protection to the pilot, that the jump jet pack doesn't offer. Nevermind the fact that the pilot is sitting in the middle of a flying fuel tank. Sorry if this doesn't make sense. It's the best explanation of a trubble bubble I got.

Well, the comics and cartoons are canon.

How about the tail rotor on the Tomahawk? Maybe it could be turned around 90 degrees and used as a pusher prop?

So are you saying that you think the designers intended the Skystriker's wing to be able to slice a Hiss Tank in two?
My point was that the Maggot didn't really need explaining away, because it would work fine if used in the way it was obviously designed.

I was thinking the other day about all the vehicles that featured a secondary, "piggy-back" manned vehicle, in which a smaller vehicle is attached to / rides atop / supplements the main vehicle; here's what I come up with:
WHALE FLAGG (technically the purpose once you add an aircraft on top, though a case can be made regarding the tow vehicle) Terrordrome Night Raven Havoc Mamba Defiant (piggy-back twice!) Rolling Thunder BUGG Avalanche General Hammerhead *I intentionally left out vehicles like the Thunderclap, Maggot & Condor, as I feel like those are more like split or tow vehicles & fall into different categories. This feature seems to have started in 1984 & all but been abandoned by 1991 for the vintage line. |
