Just throwing the idea out there, but I'd been reading up on the history of 30 RN Commando (a.k.a. Special Intelligence Unit, a.k.a. Special Engineering Unit, a.k.a. No. 30 Commando, a.k.a. 30 Assault Unit), the special operations team composed of Royal Navy, Royal Marines, and civilian personnel Sir Ian Fleming put together back in WWII and it seems like an updated version of their mission and organization would work as a template for a modern re-imagining of GI Joe, one that would give them a distinct mission profile from that of other elite JSOC units as well as justifying the diversity of occupational specialties found in the Joe roster.
30 RN Commando's primary mission was "to move ahead of advancing Allied forces, or to undertake covert infiltrations into enemy territory by land, sea or air, to capture much needed Intelligence, in the form of codes, documents, equipment or enemy personnel." Ian Fleming's team could have been something out of a comic book: he had military artists mixed in with his team working as camouflage experts, marines and sailors with a background in theatre, cryptographers, personnel with a background in finance, all working together on the same unit with hardened frontline combat types. A small, company-sized unit with a modern version of 30 RN Commando's mission profile would probably have the need for a permanently attached computer specialist like Mainframe, a CID agent like Chuckles, or even a military journalist like Scoop, all serving with weapons intelligence guys (EOD, CBRN specialists), intelligence/counterintelligence types, and the scary guys who specialize in "snatch & grab" operations. |

Black Sword are based out of the SAS/SRR HQ in Hereford. The Joes, I've not decided, probably Fort Bragg.
Mainframe's Army because he'd be based with someone like the 704th Military Intelligence Brigade. 704th Military Intelligence Brigade - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia which was the real world unit I found to use as Jammer's former unit in my first AF fan-fic series. |

My take is that they (some of the Joes: Flagg, Firewall, Flint, Duke and 12 or so more that formed Flint's and Duke's direct action teams) started off as the Intelligence Support Activity under Flagg. The entire unit, thanks to Cobra's machinations, was disavowed and forced to go underground. They are still part of the DoD, but don't officially exist anymore. But since they can't really use the rest of the DoD's support structure the team has to spread out and thats when they start recruiting Marines, Air Force, CID, etc..

i've decided to add Ambush, Freefall (could've sworn he was already there) and Chuckles as well as Depth-charge and probably swap services for some helo pilots.
I'm also going to add 2 Gurkhas and a dog-handler to Black Sword. Riley, search! |

So a topic for conversation..
Does Cobra have their own version of the MPs? I figure with all the bases Cobra has, the type of personal they enlist, that there needs to be a sizable (and powerful) group to keep them all in line as well as provide security at the various bases. I'm thinking of using the Nightwatch in that capacity. Night Adder, who is called a "Cobra Security Officer", would be an officer in the Security Forces. Wondering if can use the Nightwatch name for the unit.

The Renegade Troopers, for me (have to remove the Cobra logos), are a PMC called King Snake that serves as a recruiting tool for Cobra as well as more legit purposes or at least when Cobra needs to appear legit.

Always wondered why the old Action Force toys/comics didn't have a Gurkha or two mixed into the roster. The romanticized portrayal in fiction of the Gurkha as a blade-wielding super-soldier type would have been a perfect analogue to GI Joe's ninja-commando types like Snake-Eyes, Storm-Shadow, and Jinx.
