Maybe, but there's no guarantee it would've been any sort of hit, and it would've pretty much missed "our" generation entirely. We'd probably have a slightly better opinion of it than we tend to have of Dragon Ball Z. Actually, it'd probably be worse, since it probably wouldn't have hit US shores until the "boom" of the late 90's and at the time the most recent Macross series would have been Macross 7.

Harmony Gold is just a licensing company now, so they don't spend/risk any money creating stuff... I bet they can last a very long time. IMO eventually the dudes at HG will get old enough that they will want to make some money instead of just suing people though... so I still think a live action Robotech movie will get made.

Oddly enough HG does property management as well. I know someone who dwells in one of their buildings here in L.A.

To be brutally honest, I'm not sure if Robotech has the kind of nostalgic value some here are thinking. I feel, all considered, Voltron actually has greater resonance in the general market.
To that end, how much of Macross does Robotech need? As is, Harmony Gold basically "bought" Mospeda and adopted it as a de facto aesthetic for its most recent Robotech projects. I wonder, given that the studios are going to want to "put their own stamp" on the project, are the Macross issues even, well, an issue? I'm inclined to think that new Veritech designs, a new SDF-1 and Zentraedi designs, there isn't much, from that angle stopping the production of a feature film (unless fans/producers INSIST on using the original designs, which will forever stall the project). I think the immediate problem is going to be Harmony Gold giving WB some leeway in developing the project (an issue I feel Mattel shares, an unwillingness to let others "mess with their babies" so to speak), and in establishing an identity for Robotech in the aftermath of films like Pacific Rim, Battleship and Transformers.

It's great to see so many fellow Robotech fans. Along with Force Five, Star Blazers, and Voltron, Robotech introduced me to Japanese anime in a big way when I was a kid.
I have all 85 episodes of Robotech (Macross, Southern Cross, and Mospeada) on DVD, when ADV initially released them as 3-DVD sets years ago. They are superb.

Again, so long as the film features transforming jet fighters, a transforming super space ship, and giant alien invandors...I'm not sure it will matter whether the Veritechs are VF-1s, Alphas, or some new concept based on MODERN jet fighters like the Raptor (which I'd bet would end up being the case anyway)

Raptor Veritech? *vomits* LOL. I hate the Raptor so much (except in RL)... such an ugly plane IMO. I hate the F-18 just as much... a transforming F-18 would be just as bad IMO. If they don't do a F-14 or quasi-F-14 they should just make up a new plane... go reverse wing if they have too.

The big question is if the director and crew can even incorporate music and make it a vital element to the story.
I dunno, to me it played out better in animation(and in the Japanese version of Macross) than it did in Robotech. The concept of protoculture in Robotech was convoluted imo, whereas in Japanese Macross it was a lot deeper and actually meant something. My opinion aside, maybe the directors could get by, by just focusing on the mecha action and all that. With Macross the designs are iconic, change is to be expected with Hollywood but even in the Robotech cartoon.....anyone remember the SDF-3? Come on even as kids NO ONE was thinking that was even in the same league as the SDF-1! Wasn't similar at all, didn't even turn into a robot. Probably won't matter anyways I don't see the Robotech movie coming out of dev hell. It took HG years for Shadow Chronicles to even pan out and even before then, back in 2000 or earlier, they had a concept for a CG film iirc called Robotech 3000 which also didn't pan out. Harmony Gold only decided to give Robotech another glance once Toycom came around soliciting pre-orders for their 1/72 Macross Plus line. This was a message to fans that HG did not care about their alleged license to Macross up until that point. If they did, they would've beat Toycom to the punch and had Robotech DVD's out long before Toycom even came to the scene. Back on topic, yeah....I can see how HG can get around not using Macross designs, but still, I doubt there will ever be a live action Robotech movie. Maybe there's hope for a Japanese-made Macross live action. |

If there were any plans, you'd have think this last year would've been when they would've announced them, given it was the 30th anniversary. But they didn't even announce a new series, much less a live action movie.

at this point I would prefer a MACROSS live action movie for the US, since HG cant seem to do anything with the property.
the basic first macross story is the best part of robotech anyways
