I saw the film tonight as well. It is hard to really give a good review and point out the really EXCELLENT or less shiny parts without giving too much away. I will say that I agree with what was stated above by Destro in that there was obvious influence by the Marvel Comic run and there was quite a bit of reverence for GI Joe and the GI Joe stories that have been told in the various media that has come out over the years. Unlike the mess that ROC was, the creative team seemed like they were paying attention to the source material before they wrote the script and made the film.
I was worried with Bruce Willis playing Joe Colton because I was afraid it would be a "we've got Willis" kind of role but he was great in it. I hate 3D but the conversion went really well. I am not proud of it, but at least one time I may have moved a little in my seat when someone shot at the camera and the bullet went RIGHT AT ME! Another thing I liked was the score. It set a good mood and tone for the film and blended with the scenes and atmosphere. I will be seeing it again before it leaves the theaters, with or without 3D. I feel confident that my money was well spent on the ticket. The $8.00 popcorn seems like it was less of a wise decision but the wife would not have let me in our house if I did not bring her any. The downside to the early showing was that there was no Wolverine trailer but the Star Trek trailer looked so slick in 3D.

Any hints at Bats or classic vehicles other than what's been seen in clips and trailers?
And was the rumored after-credits scene (whatever it may be) present?

Saw it last night at a premier. I totally agree! I was awesome!!!
The characters were handled with respect, and that mountainside ninja battle was breath taking. AND they got the Cobra Commander dead-on right! Even his voice was fantastic! He has this Darth Vader like presence in the film. He & Firefly were badass. Any problem I had with the film was minor and definately didn't deter me from enjoying myself. I was one happy fanboy. Who woulda thought that he director of those dance films was able to pull off such an action packed film that had lots of nods to he comics. Shows what a fan of the material can pull off. As far as I'm concerned, Rise Of Cobra is a distant memory. I'm checking it out again, but this time on IMAX! |

Duke and Snake Eyes are captured and force into gladiator combat by Destro and Cobra Commander using Atari controllers.
I kid, of course.

I just talked to another Joe fan who saw a preview tonight. His review was exactly opposite of Fran's. To each his own I suppose. I will still see it for myself, but I'm not expecting it to really wow me. And it will be the non-3D version. I have yet to see a movie where 3D really made the difference. Every time it just became a distraction from the story.

No. Some of the actual toys are slightly based on what is in the film, but are poor versions of the real film versions. Obviously the AWE, Tread Ripper, HISS, Sting Raider, and Ghost Hawk II have counterparts in the real film; the movie versions for the AWE, Ripper, and Ghost Hawk look better than what we got. I'm so-so on the movie HISS, but the Sting Raider wasn't too bad. There is a Sky Hawk-ish helicopter for Cobra that should have been a toy, but that's the only new vehicle not seen in most commericals.

Not reading the full review, just the spoiler-free version on the front page...but that was enough to give me a HUGE ERECTION.
If Destro says it's good, then it MUST be. I can't believe that nine months have past already! I can't wait to see this tomorrow!!!
