And tonight's movie du jour was "Iron Man 2". It really ruined two great storylines. But the visuals were great.

Just got a sweet Blade Runner Blu-Ray boxset with four versions of the film, a nice art book and a cool little model of the "Concept Spinner". Haven't seen the 'Final Cut' before, and was impressed at how they've added a new performance by Joanna Cassidy's head to the body of the stunt woman during her movie death scene.

It's not that I hate the movie. I do like it. It's just a fun movie. But I've always been disappointed because it could have been so much better. My biggest gripe was the sitcom style bickering that Downey and Paltrow had. It was cute in the first movie, but so annoying in the second, with them constantly talking over each other. I never liked Paltrow at all until "Iron Man", then this movie made me not like her again. And I think the whole "Demon in a Bottle" storyline could have been used to much better effect through a whole movie. Not just by having Stark get drunk at a party and act like an idiot. All of the action scenes were top notch. And when Stark looks over his shoulder at Rhodey before they close their masks and take on the drones is one of my favorite movie-moments. The main problem is that the first film set a high bar, and this just didn't get over it like some of it's contemporary movie sequels did (The Dark Knight, Spider-Man 2, Blade II). Being forced to decrease Pepper's and Rhodey's screentime to make room for Natasha's and Fury's hurt it. So it comes off as more of a prequel to the Avengers than a sequel to Iron Man. That's kind of a good news / bad news situation for Marvel now. You get more interconnected movies, but at the expense of a great solo story. So I'm not hating on it just to be hating. It's nowhere near as bad as say Daredevil, The Fantastic Four or Spider-Man 3. It's got a great "watchability" factor. I just view it as I do Lethal Weapon 3 or 4, and Die Hard 2. A step down from the originals, but still fun as hell to watch. And yeah, even Predator 2 falls in that category. I loved the idea of a Predator in a city. It was a logical setting for a sequel. And the cast was great. I always wished they'd made it like the Dark Horse comic, and had Dutch's brother working as a cop and encountering the Predators. It would be great to see another one set now in Afghanistan, having the Predator be drawn to the conflict there. |

good points man.....
on Predator II I STILL wish Arnie could have filmed his cameo as Dutch(he wanted to). Harrigan would get Dutchs info somehow(I suppose through Paxtons character) and go see him in a verterans home where he was all beat up and he would warn him what he was up against.....as we seen at the end of Predator Dutch was fucked. Dammit.now Im gonna watch predator. |

Nothing wrong with that. I watched "Predators" again not long ago and really wish Arnie could have played Laurence Fishburne's role. He was really the only thing that I didn't like in that movie.
Tonight's movie was "Flight of the Phoenix". The remake. I want to call it a B movie, but it's better than that. The cast is great, the effects were flawless, the movie had a good pace and the direction was just what was needed. I liked it so much I had to look up the director, John Moore. He directed another of my favorites, "Behind Enemy Lines", and he's directing next year's "A Good Day to Die Hard". I love the trailers for that. Finally something good to see on Valentine's Day! |

Does the "Last Page" thing not work for anyone else? I keep having to go to the first page, then type in 215, since that's the last page of posts (on my setup), even though it lists 227 as the last page.
Anyway, tonight's movie was "John Carter". It's one of my favorite movies of this year. It's unfortunate that it will always be known as a bomb, because it's a really fun movie. Just as "The Avengers" made $500 million based on it's trailer, "John Carter" lost $200 million based on it's. I just liked everything about it. It's got a Narnia/Star Wars vibe to it. Nothing cynical about it. I thought Taylor Kitsch was great on "Friday Night Lights" and I hope he gets more chances on the big screen. The movie really makes me think that this is what a "Masters of the Universe" movie should look like. A great blend of technology and nature. And Lynn Collins would make a perfect Teela...if she hadn't played pretty much that exact character already in this movie. Last edited by Ford; 11-22-2012 at 04:45 PM..
