First, you ASSUME that Disney would shut down Hasbro's frankly MASSIVE toy production capabilities. That is largely equivalent to shutting down Marvel's comic facilities: it would be a waste of a valuable resource. If Disney is looking to buy Hasbro, the toy production area is something they'd have to deal with (and is largely the reason I and others aren't putting much into this rumor).
If nothing else, you have people in Hasbro that will NOT let their biggest competitor of the last 50 years get their (barely competent) hands on one of Hasbro's prized properties. And given the frankly paltry retail support for GI Joe, something like the Castle Greyskull preorders might well end up the ONLY way for fans to ever see remade/new playsets on the scale of the old Terrordrome or Defiant, or Flagg. And I don't "need" to check anything, please read this carefully so I don't need to constantly reiterate: SO LONG AS MATTEL IS MAKING DC COMICS TOYS AND MERCHANDISE, THEY WILL NOT BE PRODUCING ANY MARVEL TOYS AND MERCHANDISE. That's called a "conflict of interest" since DC is owned by a competing corporation (Time Warner) Now, could we see rights change hands in a few years? Sure (Hasbro's Marvel license comes up in 2015, IIRC), but as it stands, we don't know anything for certain. (Though, I wouldn't be adverse to Hasbro getting the DC license back, some nice 3.75 Batman figures would rock!) Hell, for all we know, the whole reason Hasbro has been meeting with Disney is to discuss the status of the Marvel and Star Wars licenses as both are coming up for expiration. In the case of Star Wars, the very year Episode 8 should be slated for release. Secondly im not assuming anything im simply stating my opinion that disney aquiring the rights to anything of hasbros is not good out of all the products being produced by hasbro which do you think would be the first to be left to the waist side the one that produces the least amount of sales which we all know is gi joe atm if you go to walmart target toys r us who is allowed the least amount of space i know here toys r us have one maybe 2 allotted rows for figures and vehicles transformer star wars at least 4 to 5 at least with hasbro we are getting figures might not be the amount we want or the ones we want right now we are living on borrowed time for joes in hopes that a movie they yanked once will do well because of 3D so yes i believe Joe will fall to the chopping block if aquired by disney. so I dont want disney having joe because im afraid it will vanish and i agree with the dc going to hasbro would love to see that happen superman in marvel universe scale would be awsome although dc direct is producing some nice green lantern 3 3/4 figures for exclusives Last edited by thaross; 11-07-2012 at 03:10 AM.. |

OK please read this carefully DC license expires 2013 which means if disney buys hasbro then marvel will be a mattel product next year. When i said check the facts these are the facts. Your saying they wont produce marvel while they have DC this may be fact but as i said it expires 2013 so production could begin today if the mouse takes control and product ready to deliver in? 2013.

I've seen GI Joe sold in their Downtown Disney toy store (Once Upon a Toy), among other Hasbro properties like Transformers. Recent movies like Tron and PoC likely weren't sold by Hasbro because Hasbro seems to have a lot on its plate right now with just Marvel movies! Lastly, Disney has a pretty hands-off approach with existing properties that it has acquired. Marvel comics hasn't really changed - yes, they are doing the whole "Marvel NOW!" but it likely due to a similar reboot at DC. Instead, Disney worked with Marvel Studios - something was pretty small before Disney came in. Pixar actually took over Disney in many respects, with Lassiter having a role in developing the parks. Personally, I think the talks with Hasbro have nothing to do with buying them, but just making sure the company understands the path to the future and likely making a deal for the next SW movie. And if their are talks, it would be 6 monhts or more before anything materialized because Disney is loving the attention from the Lucasfilm purchase!

G.I.Joe is currently a legacy brand on life support, so I'd expect it to be one of the first things to go in a Disney takeover.
Transformers fans aren't going to be much better off, as the brand is CO-OWNED by Takara Tommy. Up until 2010, Disney co-owned the POWER RANGERS brand with Toei and it was their inability to agree with Toei, as well as a massive mishandling of the brand which led to it being sold back to original creator HIAM SABAN in 2010. If Disney couldn't work with Toei, then how can they be expected to work with Takara Tommy? A Disney buyout of Hasbro will most likely result in the end of THE HUB, another co-owned brand, and direct competitor to Disney Channel & Disney XD. |

Is there really a conflict of interest? Sideshow has the license for both DC and Marvel. How would Hasbro/Disney having both licenses be any different?

MTV needs to consult Fact Checker.
Mattel is still way bigger than Hasbro. From Businesswire.com re: 2012 3rd Quarter: Mattel, Operating income of $487.4 million Mattel Reports Third Quarter 2012 Financial Results and Declares Fourth Quarter Dividend | Business Wire From Yahoo Finance re: 2012 3rd Quarter: Hasbro, Net earnings for the third quarter 2012 were $164.9 million Hasbro Reports Financial Results for the Third Quarter 2012 - Yahoo! Finance Meh...I don't own any Mattel crap, 80% of my collection is Hasbro, the rest are NECA and Bandai...so who's buying all the wrestling figures to put them up so high? ...the thought kind of scares me, especially since I can't think of a single other mattel brand besides wrestling figures and He-Man (same thing)... |

I heard a rumor that Disney's CEO was once a car salesman.

Mattel is a mass-retail company. World of difference. Toy Biz did briefly hold the license for both Marvel and DC in the very late 80's/early 90's but it was a very brief period, and I wouldn't be at all surprised if the laws changed and/or the reason they lost the DC license was because of said conflict of interest. |
