Mr. Hardy flies rotor AND fixed. That makes him an Army pilot, ie: not a USAF pilot.
And the Skystriker is not necessarily a Navy fighter. In the same way that the Marines' Super Cobras and Hueys are a far cry from the Army's earlier versions of those airframes, the Skystriker could be one of the few proposed upgrades to the F-14 that the Navy rejected (search ST-21 and ASF-14). It would have been the perfect opportunity for Grumman to cut some losses, and for GI Joe to acquire a proven airframe "under the radar" - one that would be underestimated to be a plain F-14. Speaking of ST-21, the latest iteration of the Skystriker XP-14F is now called the Skystriker XP-21F. It kind of reinforces my theory. Then I made the mistake of reading a book about the carrier battle around Midway in WWII. Now, I walk through Target and Toys R Us and see the Skystriker and I keep thinking how cool it would be to have Ace leading VF-99 and Slipstream leading VB-99 off the deck of a vintage Flagg. I don't have the money. I don't have the room. And it would upset the parameters that I've set for my collection to make sense. BUT it would be sooooo sweet! |

WE've dropped off a bit here guys but I hope you are all still out there. I wanted to bring this up since I'm a little out of the loop with current comics, but this is something we've discussed many times.
I was reading COBRA Civil War #5 and one of the fobbits is talking to Steeler and telling him about the new base and the pictures show what looks like a huge submarine/Battleship thingy? I haven't read past that but I was wondering if anyone else is paying attention to that? We've discussed replacing the standard USS Flagg with the Aircraft Carrier submarine before, so now I see it on the pages of IDW I'm bringing it back for discussion. I wish I had a scanner or something to take a pic of it.

That's the Tuna. Joe captured it from Cobra back in the first volume (the Shipwreck/Cover Girl/Keel Haul issues).

The Flagg is going to have a crew of around 3200, not to mention the other screening ships to protect her from air attack and submarines, so the sub, no matter how big it is, should be a huge reduction in crew and support. That would be another definate plus for the Joes. |

Did you guys see the pictures a while back from the Tanker who customized a Flagg and made it a Cobra ship? I think he called it the Anaconda. |

Yeah, I always thought Ace should have been Navy, especially after the Flagg came out.
Yes, I believe the Air Force was considering the F-14 but went with the cheaper F-15 which they felt was a superior fighter, plus they were still using the F-111A, which was their primary interceptor. Glad to have you back man. We thought you'd abandoned this place for good. Last edited by thegame68; 10-21-2011 at 12:28 PM.. Reason: spelling error corrected |

The Tuna is what the Joes call it. Cobra called it the Dreadnaught(or something like that).

"Sir, we have the GI Joe Tuna approaching. Should we arm the torpedoes?" "The Tuna? No, don't bother. That sounds like it's part of Carnival Cruise Lines." VS "Sir, we have the GI Joe Great Big Ass Stomping War Killing Boat Destroyer approaching. Should we arm the torpedoes?' "That sounds dangerous! Launch every weapon we have! In fact shoot your side arms at it too and when you run out of bullets, throw your side arms at it 1950's Superman villian style!" |

Shipwreck explained the name in last month's issue of G.I. Joe (the main book) and it actually made sense. Can't remember the reason off the top of my head.
