"Realistic fantasy" would be my vote, something like the old Sean Connery James Bond films. I agree that if it's too realistic, it won't be much different from other military-genre movies or, worse, the news. On the flip side, GI Joe is not Sci-Fi. At least not to me. So laser guns are out.
I'd go for ragheaded/chrome face-plated enemies. That also goes for chrome battle helmets. The un-uniform, er, uniforms on the Joes that fit their specific specialties. Ninja (plural) also work work well for me, so long as they're not too many. Fantastic gadgets also work. BATs in limited number. I draw the line on Serpentor unless he's some kind of cult leader, like DC Comis' Kobra. Cobra-La and its denizens aren't even in my radar. |

I want the Joes and Cobras grounded in reality, but I want the situations to be real and sci-fi if that makes any sense.
I don't want to be spun around in red tape and politics constantly, but these things play a part in the daily furstrations of our characters, especially Hawk. They also have to form the basis for Cobra's break away mentality. At the same time i don't want my sci-fi to borderline on the silly. I think the GI Joe Reloaded series was a good basis for my perfect Joe. As time went on in the series, had it progressed, i think they could have went a bit more deeper into the sci-fi nature of things and would have handled it more appropriately. It's all possible, but both sides (real and sci-fi) must be handled with care.

It should be a blend of both.
Look at the loony "scientists" out there and tell me that they aren't just itching to join their fellow crackpots in ruling the world.

I think GI Joe has always been (in it's glory days) a pretty even mix of realistic and sci-fi. That has always been the attraction to me. Pure military and pure sci-fi are enjoyable in their own right, but GI Joe always stood out because of its blend of the two. There really should be a choice in the poll to reflect that. It has never been about all realistic or all sci-fi.

i lean more realistic, i don't mind the sci-fi, but even as a kid though Serpentor was just too far out (and the beginning of the eventual end for Joe). funny thing though, while i was never that into BATS i had no problem accepting them :p
the comic was 'generally' a good balance (thank goodness they never forced poor Larry to use Cobra-La) until it got too ninja-ey. They even made some of the sillier concepts like BF2000 at least make a degree of sense (specialists who field test next gen hardware)

Pure realism would lose a lot of the fun and imagination. Cobra - La represents the other side of the spectrum. Outside of too many ninjas, the comic had a good balance. I haven't watched the cartoon enough to comment, but I found the two mini-series in the battle packs fun but a little too over the top.

No half-snakes, or neon mutants like from the early 90's line. As long as everybody has two arms, two legs and a head on top of thier neck things will be fine. I like guys like the dreadnocks or Mindbender. I can't imagine GI Joe without Ninjas now and whoever thought and orange-clad firefighter would take part in the military? I like that sort of thing. Freaks and mutants, not my cup of tea friends.
