I don't know if there is an ongoing thread for this but I didn't see anything, so I figured I'd start one.
Just got done with 1 & 2 and I think the story so far is pretty awesome. Baroness is one baaaaaaaaaaaaad mofo! I was hoping for more of Croc Master, and who knows maybe he'll flesh out a bit more but for what he did with his panels I thought it was...fitting. The artwork. Ouch. I don't wanna bash an artist or anything but I just think the art we're seeing here doesn't fit the story or franchise. I'm sure there is a better place for it, just not in G.I.JOE. I feel the artwork itself in conjunction with the kind....drab and muted looking colors just kinda make the book lose it's balls for lack of better words. I literally just picked these up yesterday it's my 1st IDW read ever, so keep that in mind with my review. Your thoughts? |

I agree with you on the art. To me the Snake Eyes comic has some awesome art in it. For some reason Cobra looks pretty cheesy. The storyline so far is pretty good though.

I think I'm gonna give the SE title a shot next.
I always felt that because so much of Joe is reality based (I mean fundamentally anyway) being that it's origins are all military, they should play up it's "fantastic-ness" with HUGE artwork. That may be why I love the latter of the Marvel run. All the stuff with Ninja Force, Trucial Abysmia...that artwork kicked, it added so much depth and action! I really enjoyed the issues of Civil War, but the artwork is just making it come off...."flat". |

The Snake Eyes book is a lot better than I thought it would be. Nice to see Iceberg and Alpine in action there. Right now I might even prefer it to the main title. Cobra is by far the best book though the art is an aquired taste. When Cobra started as a mini it was a gritty thriller - the art fit. I think it still has those sensibilities, but has morphed into a darn good Joe book. I think it might have outgrown the art style.

I was surprised that I enjoyed Snake Eyes. Probably because it doesn't really focus 100% on him. Plus the Iceberg had an amazing line "Alpine, you're the whitest black man I've every met." Priceless.

Agree that the SE title is much more interesting than I expected, and I like that artwork a lot.
The Cobra book is strong too, and I am in minority in that I like the artwork - it keeps the dark and ominous mood from the last Cobra book. |

I absolutely love the artwork in the COBRA series. It's moody and evocative and completely matches the tone and themes of the book itself. It's a perfect marriage of words and pictures.
As far as the Snake Eyes book, it's no secret that I think Robert Atkins is one of the premier GI Joe artists of all. The book itself sort of reminded me of the Marvel Special Missions run, something I hold in high regard. It's a good time to be a comic reading Joe fan. |

It bothers me how the Joes are treated in the Cobra book - just a bunch of anonymous guys wearing the same gear who are hard to keep apart, and most of whom die before we get to know them.
But perhaps that's the whole point - this is Cobra's story after all - the Joes have their own book in which to shine. In the Cobra book, the Joes are being treated more of less like the Vipers and Blueshirts have been handled all these years... |

Antonio Fuso has been doing the art for the Cobra title since the beginning and it fits the mood of that book, which is not the same as the mood/tone in the G.I. Joe or Snake Eyes books.
That being said, Cobra #2 was not Fuso's best work.

Not to mention, Fuso's Baroness is ridiculously skinny. She looks almost laughable when she puts on her trademark black leather suit. Kinda like an S&M version of Olive Oyl. Last edited by maczero; 06-29-2011 at 05:23 PM.. |
