Funny you should say that Loose Cannon, cuz I've always wondered about the same similarities to Logan. I've always envisioned Budo as being a loner; a ronin, so to speak. In my verse, he is similar to Lifeline in that he abhors violence. He isn't a pacifist in the purest sense of the word, he's just fully aware of how ruthlessly efficient he can be at delivering death, and will go above and beyond to refrain from having to resort to it...

Based on nothing but speculation and what I've heard and read about him over the years, I've always thought that Hama injected elements of his personality and personal history into two filecards: Trip-Wire (awkward guy who found peace/religion in the most unlikely context of working with explosives as an Army combat engineer) and Budo (guy who was able to combine a deep respect for his family's strong Japanese heritage with an appreciation for the more showy aspects of Americana: loud motors and electric guitar-driven music). |

Yup, Hama used to play guitar for the K-Otics (a blues/rock band that used to play parties and occasional clubs in New York during the 1980s). Hama's band was originally named The Burning Sensations but they renamed it to The K-Otics in 1983 (no relation to the 1960s band of the same name). Transformers and GI Joe colorist Nel Yomtov was the drummer and The Flash and GI Joe penciler MD Bright would eventually replace the band's original bass player. And yeah, Hama was an Army combat engineer during the Vietnam War.
Here's a transcript of an old Hama interview from waaaaay back in 1998 that was posted on one of the early GI Joe sites (it was JoeGuide.com, I think) where he talks about studying iaido, kyudo (Zen archery), and judo as a kid and playing with the K-otics: Quote:
Rod Hannah: What is your martial arts background?
Larry Hama: Played Kodokan Judo as a kid. Studied Kyudo (Zen Archery) and Iaido (Zen Sword). Dabbled in Goju-Ryu and various Chinese soft forms. RH: Do you do anything else besides writing? Anything other than entertainment? Hobbies, etc.? LH: I play rock and roll, I shoot big-bore pistols, and I still belong to all the acting unions. I used to build an occasional plastic model kit, but all I have done for the past fifteen or so years is continue to buy them and stack them on shelves in my office. I have LOTS of unbuilt kits. Whole sets of them. I just started liquidating some of them. I had all the Hasegawa Egg Planes, the complete set of SCI-FI 3-D, and all the Dr. Slump kits. I just don't have the time to devote to the stuff any more. Been working on an f-18 Hornet model for abouf four years now and all I have done is the cockpit-- (But the detail is amazing). RH: Are the K-Otics still around? If not, do you still play the old guitar often? LH: The K-Otics just played the Washington Market Street Fair. We did a full hour set of mostly original material and wrapped up with a selection of R&B faves. I've got a LOT of old guitars. Last edited by zuludelta; 04-25-2011 at 05:11 AM.. Reason: corrected band information about the K-otics |

The 1988 filecard is the ONLY version of Budo's bio I accept as cannon. He is my FAVORITE Joe, (for all unbelievers, check MY bio .)
I would near SHIT myself, if they made a POC City Strike version of him that came with his pan-head Harley, with his Katana, and Wakizashi sheathed behind his bike's saddle-bags. (!!HASBRO PAY ATTENTION!!) Anyways... |

Budo made one appearance in ARAH in #82 and he acted like Quick Kick in a "silent weapons" vein.
He got more play in some of DDP's special missions, but they really didn't hit on anything in his original look. They made him more of a James Bondian secret agent. I never liked the Budo figure because his sword was permenantly sheathed. That's an interesting theory on Tripwire and Budo, Z. It makes alot of sense. We know that SE was patterned/based on Hama's war buddy Bob Light, so makes sense that there might be more characters based on war buddies or Hama himself.

I think Doug Murray (the guy who wrote The 'Nam) might have known Bob Light as well... I remember one of the minor characters during the early issues of The 'Nam had "Light" for his surname, he never spoke (even when spoken to), he was blonde, and he was a squad M60 gunner (like Snake-Eyes was during his LRRP days). Of course, since it was Larry Hama editing the book during its first year or so of publication, maybe he just got Murray to collude with him and get Snake-Eyes an unofficial appearance in the comic.

Budo was one of the first seven Joes I bought and was a longtime fave of mine. I think the fact that he was colored in dark earth tones made him more playable for me, he almost seemed like a "camouflagued samurai" type. He also came with great accessories, a unique looking sai like dagger, and two swords.

In my Joeverse, where the ninjas excell, is in silent intrusion tactics, and assasinations that appear as accidents. SE, SS, Jinx, and Kamakura being the exceptions in that they also have tactical combat training as well.
Quick Kick is w/o question, the most dangerous when it comes to UNarmed combat techniques, following in the footsteps of the Masters, creating new styles all the time by fusing elements of all he's learned (and fought against,) together. But nobody, NOBODY, (amongst the Joes and Cobras,) is deadlier than Budo is with a sword. NOBODY. |

My version of Wild Weasles' File card:
Wild Weasel File Name: Classified Military Specialty: Ground Support Pilot Birthplace: Classified -Wild Weasel may never have been a regular guy. Using his savant like abilities to make quick calculations of air speed, trajectory, and distance; he taught himself to fly at a young age stealing boats and planes for amusement. It is rumored he started out as a stunt pilot flying prop planes with a carnival which toured the southern and mid-western states. His dreams of flying bigger, faster, and more maneuverable craft were crushed after being rejected from all branches of service for failing the psych evaluation and drug screening. As a thrill seeker he continued to fly drug runs for Columbians and working as a mercenary in Africa and South America, until he was recruited by a Cobra. Wild Weasel perfected his trade flying for COBRA operations in every hemisphere the evil organization conducts its corrupt business. His knowledge of close support aircraft ranges from jury-rigged civilian conversions to ultra state-of-the-art flying weapons platforms. When the COBRA ground forces are engaged in battle against GI JOE troops, WILD WEASEL swoops in to try and take out the enemy’s armored vehicles. When he is in the cockpit of the RATTLER, he makes the most of the planes capabilities for flying low and slow. He goes looking for trouble just so he can open up the guns and launches a mouthful of missiles at any GI JOE aircraft unlucky enough to fly in his airspace. Being an introvert allows him to focus on his mission. He is obsessed with being the best and being feared. He doesn’t realize that people shun him because he’s weird. He thinks they are in awe of Him.
