Ultimately, I think people would have been more accepting of all the creative licenses the movie people took with the property if the film had been, by certain measures, better. Unfortunately, that's not how it went down. |

For me it's a matter of reusing the code names. I have no problem with making fresh characters, but using Ripcord's codename for the ROC and Renegades and IDW characters seems more like an arbitrary choice. I don't know. I understand he's not considered a major character by many but it sets a precedent I don't like. If Scarlet or Duke or Stalker undergo some extreme change in appearance or identity, then most of what makes that character is lost and so I think a New character with a New name should be made instead of re-using codenames, which gives the impression that the new character represents the classic one.

Black Ripcord works in IDW because the character, as portrayed, is closer to what the essence of the Ripcord archetype is.
Actually, he's more of a bad ass. I liked the Wayans character in RoC. One of the better characters. Just wasn't the Ripcord archetype.

Do you use him? Will you use him? This is the mystery figure that was found to be a Z-Force character. YOJOE.COM | Mystery G.I.Joe Figure I think he'd make a good Combat Controller.

I stopped reading past issue 118 or so, but I thought Payload was always depicted as being black in the comics, not just in his first appearance. Never really gave it much thought, though, but imagine if they'd done that in the internet-era. I don't know if the change would have generated as much on-line venom and fanboy outrage as "Black Ripcord" but man, I'm sure it wouldn't have been pretty (to digress a bit, I wasn't thrilled with the idea of Hasbro turning Ripcord black... if Hasbro wanted to prominently feature a black character, I don't know why they just didn't go with Stalker... but seeing all the overly dramatic fanboy reactions here and in other forums actually had me almost lauding the change).

The whole problem with the "Black Ripcord" debate is, just like any pop-culture fueled internet argument, the two sides quickly devolved into extremes: You either liked Black Ripcord unreservedly and was an unrepentant apologist for the terrible decisions made by Hasbro and the people behind the film, or you hated Black Ripcord and were against fun, innovation, and were probably a closet racist to boot. Neither side reflected how I felt about the creative choices that led to Black Ripcord but it seemed like any discussion of the matter would inevitably break down into camps spouting those extreme viewpoints.
Ultimately, I think people would have been more accepting of all the creative licenses the movie people took with the property if the film had been, by certain measures, better. Unfortunately, that's not how it went down.

I really don't remember his other appearances. I didn't pay much attention to it until later when I saw his concept art. I could have overlooked as a coloring mistake except for the way they drew his hair. Which makes me wonder why the figure ended up white. Some figures look like their skin color was a last minute decision. Dee-Jay and Static-Line seem to Italian sounding last names and racially ambiguous sculpts.
BTW, Nunchuk shares his surname with Static-Line (Badducci), so we've got an unusual case of two guys, one ambiguously Asian and another ambiguously black, with Italian surnames. I suppose their dad got around That said, there's certainly nothing that "prevents" a black or Asian-looking person from having a European-sounding surname. I've occasionally been in the socially awkward position of being told (often by old folks who grew up in less culturally-sensitive times) that I "don't look like my name," since my parents, in their infinite wisdom, decided to give me a first name that is a popular surname in certain Slavic countries, and my surname, despite being a nominalized Filipino phrase, is often mistaken for Italian by a lot of people because of certain syllables in it that have come to be associated with Italian names in popular culture. Yeah..
Maybe Stalker was a legend to the gangs of Detroit and Moore looked up to the legend. Now that Stalker went "good", it makes Moore angry..
