the only thing i dont like about exclusive con figures, are the ones that come in bags. for example the S.W.A.T. set.
for all the big bucks spent on these, they should atleast have a cardback. but it is nothing new in having sold out figures before the con.

Would those of you that have an "in" with Hasbro ask them to make a Shooter figure as depicted in GI Joe Declassified? I would make a custom if could, but I think that would require a level of skill that is outside my scope. I don't care if the figure is official or not, but that is one of my most favorite comic stories in the entire world, and I don't necessarily need it to have a complete collection, but I think this would be a cool figure.
I know this is a little off topic, so please carry on with the thread now in session.

I would say that club figures are as official as the main line. Just because they are special sets produced in lower quantities doesn't remove the fact that they ARE G.I. Joe figures. They are adult collectibles though, not regular toys so there can be some difference there, but the GIJCC has to have their products approved by Hasbro, customs don't so there is another difference.
I believe they were planning to produce a different con set than one of the ones we got and had to change plans, because Hasbro said so, but it's been a while since I heard about it. Hasbro does more than stand by and let someone else do the work. Last edited by mizak23; 03-12-2011 at 10:22 PM.. |

I don't and won't consider any customs official no matter who they are made by. I think most people consider customs part of their personal collection, but they are in no way official regardless of whether or not someone is selling their customs/kits on a website they created.
GIJCC figures are official...whether one wants to consider them part of their collection or not is a different story I suppose. |

I hate those limited edition exclusives sets that cost up the ass and if I cannot have them then they do not exist to me. Period.

you are confusing the issue. whether you need a figure to consider your collection complete has nothing to do with whether the actual product is official product.
any officially approved figure from Hasbro, whether they manufacture and distribute it themselves or have a third party do so, is an official figure, plain and simple. your attempt to somehow minimize those official figures as merely official con figures is ridiculous; just as ridiculous as your attempt to confuse the issue. my question is why you would do either rather than simply stick to the actual facts of the matter? Did someone piss in your coffee today? It was going to go away, but by your posting, you continued it. Nice job.

I think I see where official and legal are being meshed here. Can I make an analogy?
Let's assume you ("you" the reader of my post, not anyone here in particular) have some DVDs in your home that you own. What DVDs are an official part of your collection and what DVDs are just ones that happen to be in your home at the moment? Maybe all of them. Maybe you don't really collect DVDs and the answer is none of them. See how you are the person who decides that? I can't tell you that Micheal Bay's Armageddon is not a part of your official collection no matter how much I'd like to. You decide because it is up to you. In the same way, Hasbro decides what is and is not G.I.Joe. And they recognize these figures by them being legally licensed. This is why there is a big hang up when the legal part is trying to be subtracted from the topic. The legality/license is an integral part of knowing what Hasbro has decided is official. In the question initially presented, "official" does have legal meaning. I get that your words didn't quite match what you were trying to say. It happens. But I have to say that with official in a lot of the posts, I am still not entirely getting what it is that you were looking to discuss. Quote:
OK, how's this to try and straighten this thread out towards the direction I intended it to take:
Do we as a community of Joe Fans see the complete custom figure kits by guys like Aly, Ragingspoon, Slayer, etc. any differently than a "one-off" custom by an individual fan? Does the fact that Aly's figures, for example, are publically available to everyone, and we're all pretty much aware of them make them somehow more "grassroots official/acepted" than a single, privately made custom? In other words, does the fact that Hasbro/Collectors Club has NOT given us Muskrat make Aly's verison of Muskrat the Fan-Community accepted version? My answer: Yes, I do see them as different than a one-off. They make a nice conversation piece. When placed among your Joes, they can serve as placeholders, sentimental reminders of what the community can do, cathartic manifestations of what you would like to see Hasbro release, or maybe something else. But those are ways that they are the same as a single custom. They are different because they may be a common ground between more than one collector. It may be in multiple displays right now. But if we are talking more official or more grassroots, I say no to both. They are all customs to me. I do get pretty excited when I see great ones. I actually hope that Hasbro takes note. And when some customs are repeated over and over again, this should be a sign to Hasbro that this is something we would like to see made. How many times since the advent of the internet have we seen a custom Pythona? They have actually been out there longer than that. There were plenty of Big Lob customs as well. It is an indication that many of us would like these things from the official source. I'm always hoping that Hasbro looks at the customs online and uses them as a barometer of what we would like and what their current parts library is capable of producing. to me GIJoe CC is official Joes-as is anything that Hasbro has given the 'official' seal of approval to. My custom repeater is not Official but looks nice on display with the 'official' Joes. Figures built from places like Slayer I consider kit-dolls:not official, and not customs. I don't bother with outrageously over-priced convention figures (IMO) but it doesn't make them any-less part and parcel to a 100% complete collection.

They're official alright.
I know what the OP is talking about, but "official" isn't the correct word to use. I would say there's a "hierarchy" of what's essential or not, and I think that for pretty much all of us, retail Hasbro releases come first. Anything else is up to the individual fan/collector to decide. For me it's roughly: 1. Official retail release (North America) a) from '82-'86 (the cartoon years) b) from '87 (the cartoon movie years) c) from '88-'90 (when the line was still fairly good/military) d) TRU '97-on 2. Foreign retail release (mainly talking about vintage here) 3. GIJCC official convention exclusives 4. etc... It's not really that thought out after that. I mean, you just decide what you like or what you think is "appropriate". Some people consider the Canadian con exclusives just as much of a must have as the GIJCC ones - but to me, even though they've got the official blessing from Hasbro now, they're still customs made from store-bought items...
