I was writing a game history for a project BFJ is working on. I'll find it and post it here in a few minutes.

Were you a player when you got asked to become GM? Or were you always working on the game behind the scenes? Does anyone help you with the game now? I can't believe it would be a 1 person operation. Either way, Thanks for doing the game, it's alot of time you've put into it.
He works with VQ to run things, and gets input from some of the more...opinionated vets. |

Meh, VQ is over-rated. I'd like to slap him in the back of the head one good time. I'd like to back-hand a few others while I am in the angry mode.

The game was first designed by Texas Doom. He was the original GM. Whether he designed the Hurt/Heal format or brought it from another forum game I don't know. It was very basic, just hurt and heal.
Next was Pyro and Rob, Pyro was the rules guy and Rob was the story writer. They both collaborated to create the scenarios. After that was myself, and during my time the game has gone through three major phases, the original 2 team game, three team game, and now the Strike Team/ Spec Ops format. It is important to note that from day one, Vadersquest has always been the one behind the scenes keeping the game going and finding new GMs to run the game when the old ones would leave. When Texas left, he Found Pyro, when Pyro left, he Found me. So, this game really owes it's existence to VQ. There would be no game, if not for VQ. He still has an account but he runs another site now. |

HISTORY OF THE GAME
At 10 am EST on January 27, 2008, Texasdoom randomly decided to start a thread to help some of the more frequent tankers relax and have some fun. When he did he had no idea that he had just spawned "THE GAME". In its inception, it was a very simple procedure - he came up with a list of characters all of whom started with 10 health points. Anyone who was interested in playing could stop in and post Hurt X and heal Y. A hurt removed 3 points and a heal added one. At this time there were no teams. Just whomever felt like participating. Additionally there was no posting format. Any negative comment was a hurt, any positive a heal. The only real stipulation was that each person could post only once per day. A lot of people drifted in and out of the thread and bantered with one another. However, some long-standing players got their start. Echo7Solo, Atomicpower and Viper48 among them. Of course, everyone favours one side or another, and so small groups of pro-Joe and pro-Cobra factions began to develop where they would focus hurt on characters to take them out. Things remained peaceful because there were no set teams, no rivalry and no objectives. As the game progressed a few individuals began to express more fanatical feelings. Atomicpower was the first to express strongly anti-cobra sentiments publically, and though no divisions formed, two groups emerged. However, in mid-February, Texasdoom had to step away from the game due to personal reasons. However, the players were enjoying it to much to stop. And so the_loud_master began the game V2. It carried over pretty much all the rules from game 1, except characters now started with 50 points each, and there were distinctly two groups of players, even if teams were not official meaning there had to be an equal number of characters from each side. Until now all strategy, recruiting and banter had been contained in the thread, but as the group expanded to include around ten regulars, new threads started to appear in general discussion and spam. They were designed to recruit players, keep track of stats and plan things to keep the main thread "clean" for game posts, a trend which continues to this day. As this is "hisstank" and not "thetomahawk", in these early days Joe was outnumbered approximately 7 to 1 by Texasdoom's count. As you can guess this caused some problems and pressaged the eventual rules for equal sized teams that evolved later. In texasdoom's absence two GMS were involved; one pro-joe, one pro-cobra to keep things fair. As round 2 wound down, texasdoom returned to begin planning a more detailed round three, and a cobra player named Money-B who would one day be important to the team joined. With distinct factions forming, informal teams arranged themselves around the most vocal members of each side. With the beginning of round 3 again with Texasdoom in charge, things began to take on a formal organization. Instead of a single type of post, there were now three classes that players could select; Class 1 double hurt one character Class 2 1 hurt 1 heal Class 3 double heal one character Teams allegiance now had to be declared publically with the post and would remain the same for the duration. Despite the official allegiances now required, drama did not develop. However, the first trash-talking began with the Cobra team nicknaming the joes "Clowns". The name stuck and became a running joke for many games, culmonating with a banner used by all cobras at the beginning of 2009. Somehow version 3 had a segment that allowed teams to control various continents. Most of the updates have been deleted so I don't actually understand this portion. At this point, the Joes began the first real winning streak of the game, taking several continents from Cobra and remaining way ahead. This era saw the arrival of xFlintx and Echo7Solo's ascendence to G.I. Joe team leader. Also, a board guest (I don't understand what a guest is, so I can't explain) named Golobulus also joined the Cobras and turned things around. He recruited at the time the most players (about a dozen) and with numbers on their side, Cobra managed to turn certain defeat into a sudden approach towards victory. In desparation near the end as a resurgent Cobra approached the win, a player named Vadersquest joined the Joes to fight for the right. With him and a few other new recruits they managed to delay the inevitable turnaround defeat. However, just as Cobra approached their victory, the site went down for a period of a couple days (to my understanding of the thread). Cobra was awarded a victory despite the game being unable to end. This was the start of deep divisions between teams and the emergence of rivalries which are now common in the game environment. Texasdoom had to take a leave of absence while the tank was being upgraded, and Golobulus attempted to start a new game without him. Echo7Solo refused to participate in any game not run by an impartial GM. After a few days of indecision and bickering among those who were waiting, Texasdoom began game IV. This is the first game where the rules are still intact. Three teams were formed with two leaders a piece. Joe, Cobra and Iron Grenediers. Each team started out controlling one continent of the world and had to battle it out for supremacy in each. The winning team had to KO both other teams. Ranking for players was determined either by number of kills or by number of heal points. Players were allowed to change teams in a battle but not their class. No significant new players emerged during this time, but some who would become important including AVAC, John Shaft, and most of what would be the core of Cobra's 9 game win streak. The Joe team dominated this version and eventually won. Texasdoom again took a break leading to the interim game. Because Texasdoom again took a break, Golobulus was finally able to start a game under his GM ship, the "interim" game while they waited for a new GM. This seems to be where the teams changed a lot. Many of the old player including the_loud_master, Major Wolf and others dropped out, and others who would remain stalwarts including Dominic.18 and Ultramagnus71 joined. Rules also began to morph towards those that current players would recognize. More classes were introduced but required being higher rank in order to attain them. The game was dominated by Cobra and the Grenediers but eventually won by Cobra. (It actually appears that the Joe team merged with the IGs to fight Cobra they were so dominant). After this game, Golobulus left, and it seems that another was hosted by texasdoom, but that thread is no longer available. It appears to have run for less than four months, but I know it was also dominated by the Cobra team. After THAT game Texasdoom left the tank to start his own website with the Joe vs. Cobra Battle Game. I ran across it once by accident years back, but cannot find it now. Its very different from the game here. Pyroclasm/Bamphalas was then tapped to be the next GM. *That's as far as I got going through the old threads. But that sort of sums up the really early days. Dominic, Atomicpower and VQ can correct any mistakes that are there* |

He's still the mod-in-charge. Though he spends decreasing amounts of time on the tank due to real life.
He's still around, just quiet. |
