Don't really feel like flipping through all the posts, so sorry if this has already been stated.
I just finished watching episode 4 and it finally occurred to me why I dislike the show. It's not just the animation, which I despise (Duke's skin and hair tones make him look like an Oompa Loompa). Though about the animation, why have animators been making cartoons look less realistic since the 80's? I understand stylized animation (I loved the Genndy Tartakovsky Clone Wars), but I really miss cartoons that just tried to look realistic and awesome. But I'll repeat because it bares repeating. Stylized artwork is a lot faster and easier to draw. The knee-jerk response would be that they are being lazy, but this also allows the animators to put a lot more gesture into the movement of the characters. ARAH looked more realistic, if you just look at stills, but in terms of movement, they were terribly stiff compared to now. So it's not that Renegades is less detailed, just that the emphasis on detail is being placed upon gesture. As for the other point, that's far more subjective. I think the characters haven't totally warmed up to each-other and are just trying to cope with the situation any way they can. |

I don't look through much other than customs in the forums, but this was on the front page, and I'm very glad I'm not alone. I watched the first 4 episodes this weekend. This doesn't seem like a cartoon designed to support a toy line. There are like 6 characters and 1 vehicle. I am so glad that Hasbro recognizes that this show won't sell toys, and is keeping with the realistic POC style 'inspired' by Renegades. I understand the importance of having GI Joe out there in front of a new generation, but this is not a good show in any sense. My g/f can tolerate a lot of the crap I watch, but she was getting annoyed with this show. I turned it off and finished watching later. Frat douche Mindbender? Mad Max Major Bludd? English nerd Breaker? Evil jock Flint. No thanks. This show actually reminds me of 2003 TMNT cartoon with that giant van they won't leave, but not nearly as awesome as that TMNT. I'll keep watching in hopes that they go somewhere with this, but the animation is lacking, and the characters suck hard. Wish they had killed Tunnel Rat instead of Ripcord. I don't mind a reboot and reimagining for a new generation, but the bad outways the good with this series. I loved both classic cartoons and the ROC movie, by the way.

So finally, the reason I dislike Renegades is that it seems like the dialogue and actions of the characters are designed to make them completely unlikeable. I can't pinpoint too many specific occasions, but I remember in the beginning of episode 4 there was an exchange of dialogue between Tunnel Rat, Duke, Scarlett, and SE (unspoken), and I thought to myself "All of these characters are sarcastic dicks!"

I've flipped through about a dozen pages, and I have seen many valid points both ways.
@Zefram- You bring up some really good points about utilizing the animator's time and budget for additions such as gestures and actions (also improved backgrounds for the most part). I just think that this animation style is no longer fresh, and I think a realistic style would be a welcome change in the current animation (I think with modern techniques that the animators could pull of realistic and still retain the intricate gestures). Also, I realize the characters haven't warmed up to each other, but in certain cases (such as Jinx) I absolutely despise when the dialogue is written to reflect current tween sass and terminology. Before everyone chimes in that "The show is for kids," I know that, but I remember shows of old that were aimed at kids yet still featured mature dialogue that an adult could appreciate (and no, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is not a good example). |

So finally, the reason I dislike Renegades is that it seems like the dialogue and actions of the characters are designed to make them completely unlikeable. I can't pinpoint too many specific occasions, but I remember in the beginning of episode 4 there was an exchange of dialogue between Tunnel Rat, Duke, Scarlett, and SE (unspoken), and I thought to myself "All of these characters are sarcastic dicks!" The Joes, especially Duke, don't trust Scarlet because she's intel, or a "spook" or "spy". Scarlet doesn't think very much of the rest of the Joes because they are all "grunts", and she thinks they aren't worth the time to really include on the plan. That puts Duke and Scarlet at odds as they are the leadership figures. The Joes, especially Duke, don't trust SE because he's the unknown factor, and we all know what knowing is. Honestly, IMO, they are all decent incarnations of what they represent. Duke is a young Sgt. He takes his responsibilities very seriously, and worries that his men are being misled. This leads to bicering between he and Scarlet. A more seasoned officer wouldn't let it slide, but Scarlet doesn't command very much respect from the Joes yet. Scarlet is typical of a young officer, a bit big for her britches, and she lets her ambition get in the way of what is important. A bit elitist, even though she's in way over her head. Smart, though. Roadblock is a fairly good representation of a Corporal. He's capable, and just wants to get the job done. Able to listen, and take things in. Trying to help the others without stepping on their toes. Showing the beginnings of developing leadershp skills of his own. To me, he's the most likeable of the group. A genuinely good soul trying to do the right thing. TR is a good representation of a PFC, as far as I can see. That's the rank where you usually become very good at your job, which sometimes leads you to realize when your leadership might have their heads up their butt. Unlike SP4's and Corporals, PFC's are at the odd position of usually being some of the most skilled and qualified at their jobs since they still do them on a daily basis. However, they don't tend to get very much respect. This can come out in them taking any opportunity to take shots at leadership when they make mistakes. This keeps Duke and Scarlet on their toes, and also keeps them from taking themselves too seriously. So while it can come off as dickish, it serves a purpose in the group dynamic.

And please, not ARAH. It had some awesome bits of dialogue (especially in the movie) but as a whole had a serious case of "your mileage may vary"). >_> I will concede that whenever 30+ year-olds try to write dialogue for teens it rarely (if ever) ends well, but I've heard much... much worse... ...so... much worse... ...oh God... ...why... ... why would they do that... ... the dub... ... to Sailor Moon S... vzdzkl;l...yhxc... |
