Given that it operates both domestically and abroad, G.I. Joe becomes a very strange beast. Some of the insights and suggestions here are good, but I think I'd almost see the Joe team as its' own separate entity altogether. At least if we're looking at a "full" Joe team with all the inherent support we've seen over the years (including the personal aircraft carrier, space shuttles, and law-enforcement/intelligence elements).
Hama clearly drew some inspiration from the real-world Delta when creating the Joe team, so in the Hama-verse it seems they're a "beefed-up" joint version of Delta (and clearly answer straight to the Pentagon/Department of Defense). If you go with a "stripped down" Joe team that doesn't include the "excessive" stuff, then DIA or some special section of SOCOM that's exempt from the Posse Comitatus Act would probably work (certain elements of SOCOM already are exempt from that act, so there's a precedent). |

hmm, i think if it were real, it wouldnt be such a big diverse group. it would probably be every leader of each squad or platoon in their own special group. cobra would probably be every terrorist nation combined, working together.

I would say they would have to be set up much like a mini MEU in order to incorporate all the Air and Armor they tool around with. Without all those vehicles it just wouldn't be any fun. So the main question is how big is GIJoe? A standard MEU is like 2200 Marines and Sailors and I'm not sure that even includes all the Sailors that are on the accompanying ships that make up the Flotilla Battle Group.
It would almost seem better if the USS Flagg was some sort of specialized seacraft that didn't need all the support, of a Frigate and a Destroyer and a submarine escort. In Fact what if the Flagg we in fact some sort of Giant Submarine Aircraft Carrier? Easy for me to do since I never owned the real Flagg, although I made several out of boxes growing up. They had one of these things in Sigma Six, and I bet the Submarine in Rise Of Cobra was capable of launching those weird VTOL aircraft they were using. Which brings me to the point of the type of Aircraft the Joes would have. I think they would all have to be VTOL that's it. (Which means more USMC pilots, or actually one.) This imaginary Sub/aircraft carrier, would get deployed and be the local HQ for whatever type of missions the Joes engaged in. I envision them in say a place like Iraq or Pakistan or somewhere in between. But they could be in the Jungles of the Amazon or Africa, or any of the made up Eastern European countries they fought in. They would basically set up a forward operating base deep in enemy territory taunting them to fight. Airdrop in the HQ like in Issue 24? and set up all the Artillery. (At least this is how I can find a use for that stuff) Then this Firebase would have Skyhawks for use and other Helicopters. Plus the Joes would serve as an ad hoc rescue team for other US units as well as a Recon element for whatever zone they would be in. Routing out Cobra cells sounds fun, but that's a job for Chuckles and some of the more spy-like Joes. Most of my Joes are Reconnaissance and Light Infantry types. Still Hostage Rescue would have to be their bread and butter. This way small teams could get deployed around the world. I think the Flagg would be as much of the headquarters as the PIT would be, which brings me to the next topic which is the PIT. I think it would have to be under Aberdeen Proving grounds or maybe one of the other Army research facilities. I don't think that it should be as large as we've seen the PITs. Just somewhere for experimental vehicles to come from that would explain the unique vehicles they drive. Someone once wrote up the best explanation for this using current budget office and finance committee procedures. One day I'll track it down. I think it was somewhere on the Canadian Joe website. I would imagine that there would be a strong CIA/SAD/DOD presence as well as MI6 and probably Canada's Security Intelligence Service. (this way we can add the Action Force guys) Maybe the Joes are deputized somehow to get around Posse Comitatus. Personally they are all part of SHEILD in my Verse so I can add in all my Marvel Universe figures. But alas that's another story. Hey Sailor Joe how many Sailors would it take ….(Sounds like a bad joke) To fill my imaginary USS Flagg submarine?

Kinda like in the movie? A secret special forces team made up of the best soldiers? Or I always thought the "GI Joe" concept applied to all military and the Joes were just the best and the rest of the grunts were also Joes just not Joes with their own figure.

If we're talking about ARAH style then It gets tricky since Cobra operates in different countries. Is the US military just going to land willy nilly on every country that cobra is operating on?
Was GI Joe created just to fight Cobra? How is Cobra defined? Is Cobra just some militant group that law enforcement should be dealing with instead of the US military. Isn't Cobra Commander a US CItizen? Then there's the Posse Comitatus Act that you have to deal with. I would think GI Joe would be less military and more of a federal terrorist law enforcement group. Something like CTU on the television show 24. Last edited by Mazinger; 06-08-2010 at 12:21 PM.. |

G.I. Joe is an specialized anti-terrorism organization. So no, if Cobra didn't exist (but the Joes did) they would be likely the ones sniffing out major terrorist sects. Quote:
Quite true but if he is a citizen, much of his activities are outside US Borders. In the case of Springfield, sometimes the military can offer services that the local authorities cannot provide. By declaring a state of emergency, and thus the request of federal funds, the military can (and actually often does) step in.
