Troynos has an interesting theory about giving different enemy taskings to different units. But it doesn't work that way in the real world... Delta fights the same kinds of terrorists and same groups as DevGru, SAD, ISA, SF, Rangers, SEALs, etc. It's a combined arms struggle in the war on terror.

Talking about "The Traitor" cartoon episode, a few pages back there was a Lt. Claymore (I use the Cobra Extreme Desert Mine Trooper) that was in Cobra that had to take a backseat to Dusty's leadership. Talking about Cobra mining operations, corporations and Springfield a few pages back... Reminded me about Jennings & Rall from the short-lived tv series Jericho. Season 3 is a comic book series. That may give you a few ideas for a 80's backstory or contemporary setting for a JOE/Cobra inner workings?

I wonder how many figures they make for retail? It has to be in the 1000's where as they make like 500 or 1000 of the exclusives, and there are never enough.

Bellomo's book says Recondo's weapon is an M14, but to me, it looks more like an M1A1 carbine. I trained on an M14 and to me, Recondo's weapon seems a tad too small to be one and the angle at which the magazine is attached to the weapon is all wrong (not to mention that none of the services used pistol grips and retractable/folding stocks with M14s back in 1984).
I've seen his gun somewhere, but in my memory it's not US made. I grew up and always thought it was a Swedish K Grease gun, but it's obviously not. I had once seen it in a photo of Australian SAS troops, but I can't find it anywhere. IIRC (and somebody please correct me if I'm remembering wrong), Hama already had Fury Force in development as early as 1980 at the very least (the Fury Force sketches I have scanned are signed and dated 1980, he could have had the ideas for the characters before then). He was hoping to get Fury Force launched as a new series set in the Marvel Universe (conceptually, it was supposed to be something like a modern version of the Sgt. Fury and his Howling Commandos comic set in World War II that ran during the early 1970s, but this time starring an all-new Sgt. Fury -- Nick Fury, Jr. -- leading a SHIELD special ops team in modern day adventures). For some reason or another, Hama's proposal for a Fury Force comic never really flew with the editors at Marvel and it was pretty much forgotten. This was a year before Hasbro approached Marvel looking to get creative input for the filecards and a tie-in comic produced for their 1982 re-launch of the GI Joe property as a 1:18 line. The story goes that nobody at Marvel wanted to work on the filecards and GI Joe comic (no one wanted to work on packaging text and what was basically a monthly 22 page long ad for toys) except for Hama (and even he needed some convincing). In the process of writing the filecards, he managed to find an avenue through which he could introduce the character concepts he developed for Fury Force into a mainstream product/publication: Fury Force's Spook evolved into Snake-Eyes, Nick Fury, Jr. became Hawk, Steeler (a sergeant in Fury Force) became Steeler (a young lieutenant in GI Joe), Jelly became Stalker, Lilian Gaul became Scarlett, elements of the Fury Force character Brujo would eventually find expression in Gung-Ho and Leatherneck's design and characterization, and Louie Louie would eventually find a second life as GI Joe's Tunnel Rat. So who developed the original line of 13? |

Hasbro had already developed the toys. They just went to Marvel for the personalities.

This wouldn't be the last time Hasbro would approach Marvel for creative naming and universe-building help with their pre-existing products and IPs. They would do the same thing with the Transformers, a year after the break-out success of GI Joe: ARAH. Hasbro basically imported and acquired the licences to all these different transforming robot toy lines from Japan (which explains why the G1 Transformers came in all sorts of different scales... they were made by different and competing Japanese companies). Hasbro wanted to market this disparate collection of imported toy robots under a unified label, so they approached Marvel editors Jim Shooter and Dennis O'Neil and asked them to create a shared "universe" and history that all these robots lived in. They then got writer/editor Bob Budiansky to come up with the names and write the "tech spec biographies" (the Transformers' equivalent of GI Joe's filecards) for the toys. In many ways, Budiansky is the property's equivalent of Larry Hama. Last edited by zuludelta; 02-06-2010 at 05:10 AM.. |

Nice Zulu,
It can't be the M1A1 since the grip is all wrong. And the sight doesn't look right. But it sure looks like that Beretta wrapped with some canvas to keep out the dirt? The sight looks right as well. I wish I could see a carded figure since those figures still told you what weapon was included. Of course it seems like the "para" is just a modified M1 anyway. It says that the figure came with an "M1 4E2X rifle," which I suppose is a gun toy designer Ronald Rudat made up, but is most likely based on the M1A1 paratrooper carbine (not to be confused with the M1 Garand or the Springfield M1A rifle... they're three totally different weapons chambered for three different cartridges. Due to the similarity in nomenclature, lots of people confuse the three). Last edited by zuludelta; 02-06-2010 at 07:45 AM.. Reason: added picture links |
