I guess I'm asking, why do we feel the need to be recognized for something? Labeled as something? Why can't we just be and not look for any hidden meaning or try to put a value on our lives? |

My career at any given time has always defined me because I throw myself completely into my work.
Tending bar for 10 years was defining and then I grew to resent being defined as a bartender. So I grew up and graduated college and moved on. I guess getting kicked out of college was pretty defining too. |

I don't know that you can really say what defines yourself until much later in life. What defines you at 20 is far different from what defines you at 30 etc...
That being said, I think one is defined by their character. Not by events from the past, but the decisions made by reflecting on the events. Be defined by your own achievements and not by the failures of someone else. |

When I was 23 years old I was the only survivor of a head on car accident. After that I went to college and got a degree in Aviation, now I am a pilot.
I think the accident, college, and being a pilot, are the 3 key factors to me being me today. |

I always hated defining myself, it started sounding pretty silly. I don't do one thing that truly defines me. I've got lots of experiences that I've learned from, but not a singular event that everything hinges on. I can always rationalize why I might do something not in my nature too. Plus, you're the worst person to ask about yourself. We all have an ideal self and a true self, I think the people that are able to really understand their true selves are pretty rare as are the people that can make their true selves match their ideal self.

I define myself.
But one time, I was in a church play around the age of 5 and they had all those filler roles around the stage, and there were rocks and other things, but most importantly there were rocks. I wanted to be a rock so badly. I wanted to just put that plastic bag on and just sit there. But no. God didn't want that. He wanted to make sure I was a flower. With petals around my head and grumpy old scowl on my face. It wasn't long after that that I stopped going to church.
