Dreadnoks are criminals pretty much, they have drug and arms dealing operations, smuggling and international piracy, poaching and black market diamond and precious metals operations using their motor cycle clubs as cover. Officially they have no ties to Cobra but their business dealings always seem to work in Cobra affiliated operations favour.. The Head Hunters are drug dealers and have occassional turf wars with the Dreadnoks. They have no ties to Cobra (CC hates drugs) but have benefited from their tech and hardware by defecting Vipers and corrupt Cobra officers selling stuff to make a few bucks. Alot of the Head Hunters are ex Vipers. Gristle is a former Guardsman. The Iron Grenadiers are a European based arms and private military contractors. They're like Black water. They have no ties to Cobra. Destro hates Cobra. The Crimson Twins have their own thing going separate from Cobra, they provide financial and combat support but are more interested in their own media, financial, real estate and commercial interests. They control Cobra's financial and banking interests and resort to para military solutions only as a last resort. They have the Dreadnoks on retainer to 'screw over' their various commercial shipping rivals, etc. Cobra La are their own religious group and have little interest in para military affairs. However, some view them as even more dangerous than all the other groups because they use religion and the promose of eternal salvation to brainwash their followers..kinda like the DC Comics Kobra. I still have to figure out where Python Patrol fits in. |

I figure Destro "leases them out" and offeres their services as another service offered by M.A.R.S. In other words, Destro might say to the government of Sierra Gordo, "Well, I can sell you some HISS Tanks, or some Stinger jeeps, or I can lease you a unit of the Iron Grenadiers." I would think they're VERY tough, and VERY well equipped. But I wouldn't classify them as "terrorists", just a really well organized, and disciplined mercenary force. That's just my understanding.

Any country that is friendly towards the U.S. or it's allies would be an enemy of Cobra. Mainly because they hate democracy - it's antithetical to totalitarian rule. So let's say Sierra Gordo, or Borovia wants to expel the U.S. Ambassador and end diplomatic relations with the U.S. Cobra would offer to show up and "help" this nation with it's efforts to end diplomatic relations with the U.S. Cobra would show up with equipment and man power. They might also convince the local government that Cobra needs to set up a Terror Drome and leave a contingent of troops there "just in case". And Cobra sets up an Embassy in that country.

Yeah, I liked that issue as well. Overall, I think GI Joe: Special Missions had tighter scripting and plotting than the regular title. I just wish the editors had gotten Ron Wagner to pencil an issue or three (don't get me wrong, I like Herb Trimpe's line art as much as the next Joe fan, but Wagner, to me, is the definitive GI Joe comic book artist).
Hmm - good idea. I posted the news in its own thread in the news & rumors section. We'll see if anyone runs with it.

In my Verse, Cobra was created out of the Secret Society (who know controls/runs The Coils). They haven't taken over any countries, as far as the public knows, but they have their hands into alot of countries and one or two are really puppet governments that cobra controls.
Both Cobra and Coils are world-shapers, they want to control everything and everyone and shape the world to their image. Cobra was more behind the scenes, but is moving to be more upfront. With the Society of the Coiled Serpent behind The Coils, they are more shadowed and behind the scenes but are starting to push Serpentor forward as a legitimate monarch. IGs are private army. Red Shadows are the newest and most unknown, they're the ones that are completely unpredictable. I need a term to describe these groups that would help provide a reason why the Joe team would be created to face this specific and specialized threats. Why create the Joe team if Delta Force or the Rangers could handle them.

Here's my pov:
Cobra Troopers are ideologically-motivated volunteers with a reasonable though skewed sense of justice. Cobra Vipers are elite troopers and special-forces capable, like US Army Rangers, with various specializations (i.e. Range Vipers, Night Vipers, SAW Vipers, etc). Crimson Guards are like the CIA, selected from the best and brightest Vipers with post-graduate educations and real-world experience. Iron Grenadiers are part of Destro's highly-trained, private security force--mercenaries by trade but not driven by just money alone. The Coils are fanatical mercenaries--dogmatic, zealous extremists who serve more for the cause than the contract. |

I'm going to use Cullen Esterhazy, I can work his Tibetan time in with Coltons Adventure Team days (where he met Indy and Col. Clancy).

I see Destro/MARS differently - it's a business or arms dealing and military expertise, but I hear what you're saying about Cobra. There are "Terrorist States" (like Iran) that use direct terrorist action, training foreign terrorists, and funding other terrorist groups as their means of foreign policy. I see Cobra this way, only more sophisticated and with different ideology.
Any country that is friendly towards the U.S. or it's allies would be an enemy of Cobra. Mainly because they hate democracy - it's antithetical to totalitarian rule. I think I'm gonna use him too. In my 'verse, he'll be the Joes station commander in the region. His mission, to monitor possible Cobra incursions into Chinese controlled Tibet and to keep an eye on Cobra LA in the Himilayas.
