A sequel is inevitable. Its made a profit of 49 million dollars. It's not a box office hit. A normal budget for a sci-fi movie (100 mil or so) and D9 would barely be breaking even. Wolverine was 150 mil, budget of that on D9 and it would be a flop. D9s only "saving grace" (so to speak) is that it had a low production budget to begin with. So is it really that huge of a hit? Box office totals-wise, it's not. But becuase it had a low production budget it is. Kind of interesting.

The funny thing about D9 is that it's only a hit because the production number was so low.

D9 is a financial hit, not a box office hit.

All great point Troynos...
Also we live in a society where in perception is reality. So if people perceive that this little movie made as much as the big boys they then perceive it as being a bigger hit. The result is it becomes their reality. The movie business is not unlike politics. Its the way you spin it. I would spin it like this: "ROC had a huge budget and made its money back barely. D9 was an underdog, dethroned ROC and made twice its budget back. It had an unknown cast, director and pulled ahead of ROC and stayed ahead for several weeks dispite ROC's major A-list actors and director." The only thing I would argue is not calling it a box office hit....... it has still brought in a 100 million dollars. No small feet for any movie and its still going. It will end up with 150 - 200 million worldwide by the time its done. |

I'm surprised how well Joe is hanging around. I think that bodes well for the possibility for a sequel. obviously there is alot of interest in the brand, and if Paramount can reduce the costs, make a better movie, the sequel could easily do better.

I'm actually surprised at D9s international number. That's really low. Has it not opened everywhere or is the "message" not playing very well across the seas?
No matter how you spin it, the only thing that gives D9 it's push is the production budget. If it had been in the 100 mil + range (like a normal genre movie), then it wouldn't be talked about like it has been. Take the production budget out of the equation (which to the majority of mainstream america and Joe Average, they don't know the production budget) and what do you have? Perception wise, by box office totals alone, RoC is the bigger hit. I haven't seen D9 yet, so can't say whether it's good or not.

Its not great......... its pretty good. The hype kinda killed it for me. I was expecting a great mind-blowing flick but got a good I've seen this before flick. If that makes sense.
I still got to say that 100 million dollars is no small potato despite the budget. |

What are you waiting for... Christmas? GO see it then decide if it's a hit or not then you can form your own empowered opinion if it is a success or not. I saw it, it kicked the hell outta ROC in the CGI, character develoment and story substance areas. Unlike amalgamut of a tapestry horribley sewen together with the GI JOE brand slapped on it. D9 has done exceptionally well and did so without all the shock and awe of a super bowl preview of it's trailer and waaay less budget.
