The trailer lies, the movie does NOT suck!
it's not great either. Your enjoyment will largely depend on what you're looking for. It's not a typical superhero movie. They went a little humorous. They went a little campy. Seth Rogen is not a typical action movie star. That being said, watching an out of shape, arrogant, goofball prick slowly come to the realization that what he's doing is not a game and has real, serious consequences and slowly becomes a genuinely clever bad-ass willing to risk his life to do the right thing by the finale makes for a pretty damn good story. Jay Chou plays Kato, a mechanic/driver/maker of exquisite coffee that acts as Rogen's enabler/partner. He's Q, Bruce Lee, and Top Gear's the Stig rolled into one, and provides some genuine dramatic moments when he very quickly gets sidekick angst while GH gets the headlines. A brilliant, but slightly aging (pointed out with cringe-inducing bluntness by Rogen in the movie) Cameron Diaz plays Rogen's secretary who unwittingly becomes the mastermind behind the Green Hornet's escapades thanks to her criminology based predictions. Christoph Waltz plays Chudnofsky, a hysterically insecure crime-boss who has issues with everything from nobody being able to get his name right to his wardrobe. He also has a double-barreled pistol and has a habit of violently killing people with it for insulting his wardrobe or getting his name wrong. It says a lot that Waltz can play a character this deranged and over the top but still make him threatening. The movie is not without its flaws. There are some obvious plot holes, Rogen ends up being a little too good at being an unlikable dick early on, and I was personally sick of Kato-vision five seconds after I first saw it, and possibly worst of all, the movie never really gets as serious as it should by the end. It's all about Rogen's character coming to the realization it's not a game, but the movie can't stop having fun long enough to hammer that home for the audience and become genuinely dramatic before the roller-coaster ride that is the finale. All that being said, there is some excellent action, brutal and entertaining fights, and everything is just a little over the top. It's not The Dark Knight, and it's never trying to be, but it does manage to be a fun and exciting movie that does a good job not taking itself too seriously (which means it'll probably tank at the box office). 7 out of 10. Not great, but still fun. BTW, do NOT waste your money on seeing this is 3D. I don't know for sure but I think the movie was up-converted (which always looks like shit) and the only part that really takes advantage of it are the closing credits. |

I enjoyed it, but it wasn't really the Green Hornet... it was like a spoof of the Green Hornet. I really liked the old show - Britt Reid should be able to hold his own. Seth Rogen showed a lot of love for the old show, but I wish this character had been taken more seriously. It could have been a great comic book film - it had the potential to be as good/realistic/gritty as the Dark Knight... it wasn't that.
What it was was good, but forgettable. Kato was awesome. The Car was fantastic. And Rogen was funny, but for a Superhero, he was far from super.

I liked it. I thought it was really funny and didn't take itself too seriously. It was just a different kind of movie than a Dark Knight. There may have been potential for some type of gritty update, but all that was squashed the moment you heard that Seth Rogen was attached. At that point I knew what I was expecting.
The beauty of it is that it was kind of like Shumacher's Batman films, especially Batman & Robin - it was silly, but it was ok with silly. The reason why Shumacher's Batman never worked is because it was supposed to be a continuation of Burton's Batman. It was silly, but the audience was not ok with it because that's not what they were used to or expecting. Green Hornet was silly, but it never had a serious/dark version ever put in front of it on screen, so there was no problem with it being silly. Just a side note, this is in NO WAY an excuse, validation, or anything promoting the acceptance of Shumacher's Batman films. I just wanted that to be clear. |

I enjoyed it when I saw it a few weeks ago. I wasn't expect much out of it but in the end it was an okay movie. I never watched the show from the 60s or read any of the comics, so I didn't really have anything to compare it to. I was stuck watching it in 3D because that's all my theater offered but what can I do.

Seth Rogen's character basically ended this movie where Bruce Wayne started in Batman Begins, 95% of where they needed to be to be a true badass superhero. So Bruce becomes Batman fairly early, while you have to suffer through a whole movie of Rogen being a goof before he really starts to come through. It's a perfectly legitimate way to tell a story, but not necessarily the best way to tell a superhero story. Peter Parker had his defining moment much earlier in the film, so you get the whole second half of the movie to enjoy Spiderman, rather than Peter becoming Spiderman. Hope that makes sense. |
