I think the real reason to keep his identity hidden is to protect Adam himself. If Skeletor ever found out, he'd just hunt Adam and beat him down.

Plus, even the most powerful man in the universe needs a break every now and then, but how could he get that break if he had no secret identity? All of Eternia would hound Adam to solve their problems if they knew he and He Man were one and the same. Also too, He Man's enemies could more easily dispatch him by striking at him while he was disguised as Adam and consequently less powerful. So as you can see, keeping his secret identity just that; a secret, is incredibly important to the character. |

They thought a lot on making it so the two seemed like two totally different characters. *sigh* I really liked this series. THIS was how you update classic stuff in my mind. |

I would love to see a MOTU series set in an Eternia ruled by Adam. I would have him marry Teela (who by this time would be Sorcerous of Castle Grayskull) and rule his Kingdom from a restored Castle Grayskull. Thoughts?

Good idea, blayze5150! I think you're right about changing the story a little and advancing it forward several years. Adam is now King and married to Teela (love the idea that she is the new Sorceress, sorta obvious really), several characters have retired, been kidnapped or been killed off, but Duncan the man at Arms, now in his 70's, is Adam's Miltary adviser.
Skeletor is more evil than ever since he has been fighting this war for years and gained virtually no ground, so he's desperate and more ruthless! Eternia is suffering in the grips of his most fearsome campaign! And no one has figured out Adam is He-man, despite similar swords and pets as Eternia's greatest champion!

One thing I didn't understand about the original series is how no one noticed that He-Man and Adam looked identical, one just wore a white shirt and purple vest. That was worse than Clark Kent's glasses.

Of course, if this were to actually happen, they (the studio/Mattel) would have to introduce He-Man and Teela's teenage son to be the "new" He-Man, and basically turn all the old characters into supporting roles in favor of hip, new versions. As for the old secret identity, I agree that it was largely (but not entirely) unnecessary. I did like the in-universe mystique it gave to He-Man though...the mysterious badass warrior who pops up when needed and then disappears. But yeah, in the old-school series it was really bad. He-Man was just shirtless Adam with a tan. When I got older I had to tell myself that the Sorceress had some special enchantment on him that prevented folks that weren't already "in the know" from recognizing them as one and the same. Heck, I'm OK with Adam keeping his identity secret from the public at large, but what never made sense to me was why he couldn't tell Teela and Randor (and Marlena, though I believe they hinted that she figured it out in the old series). It's not like they couldn't be trusted, nor weren't already targets of He-Man's enemies (as noted above). I mean hell, if they could let Orko in on "the secret" there's absolutely no reason Teela couldn't be as well. |

I always liked Prince Adam, I thought it added more character to Adam/He-Man's identity, especially with struggling for his parents approval and everyone thinking he was a lazy coward who couldn't lift a finger and always ran in the face of danger.
The Filmation series dealt with it in an episode, "Adam no More" where he convinces King Randor to take him on a diplomatic mission, and in the face of danger chooses not to change into He-Man and endangers his father's life. They dealt with it more in the MYP series, which I loved also. There is an episode (can't think of it off the top of my head) where Marlena kind of gives Adam a wink, implying she knows his true identity, which I thought was a nice touch. I would like to see a story set 20-30 years down the line. Perhaps peace has come to Eternia and King Adam/Queen Teela have a son of their own. Most of the stories thus far have always left us off with He-Man and Skeletor engaged in their eternal conflict, which I suppose much like Batman and the Joker really should have no ending. |

This is easy. Adam is actually from Earth, he was pulled into eternia by the MCP becuase he kept pushing him in the "real world" and in a freak mishap, he was frozen in an orbit around eternia for 500 years. He then returned to Eternia when the Sorceress found king Randor and his queen mourning the loss of her still born child. She mind whiped them both and they both felt that Adam was now thier true son and he had aged all this time. Adam then goes on to develop warp engine technology with man at arms and Volrton appears to perform first contact right before Galactus devourers Eternia killing everyone.
The End. That clears up that descrepency mighty fine...mighty fine indeed. |
