So, this bad boy hit my mailbox courtesy of Netflix last week. Gotta say, it wasn't as bad as I remembered as a kid. Has the chick from friends and that guy from Star Trek: Voyager as well as the Russian guy who tried to kick Rocky's ass. I'd have to say the most compelling character (a feat not too hard) is Skeletor. I think it's the guy who played Perry White in the last Superman movie. Skeletor was evil, looked pretty cool and was all around a pretty decent bad guy. MOTU suffered from "Transformers" syndrome though, ie He-Man doesn't really seem to be in the movie that much. The story tended to focus on the "Earth" characters instead of where the focus SHOULD have been: Eternia and its residents. STUFF THAT SUCKED: >The Script >Orko was replaced by some weird dwarf guy >Took place on Earth >Not enough He-Man >Only one familiar bad guy (besides evil lynn and Skeletor): Beastman. There was some femmy lizard guy a weird warlock dude who I affectionately refer to as "Vagina Face" and some ninja: boo. >Teela >Sorceress was old >Slow and boring sword fights >No BATTLECAT!? THINGS THAT DIDN'T SUCK TOO BAD: >Special effects were decent >Skeletor's Tatooine skiff >He Man's costume was decent >Skeletor >Man At Arms had a cool costume >It was 80's tastic. What did I want it to be? Somewhere between Conan and Star Wars and minus the cheese. I'd also have liked to completely nix the "let's go to Earth 1987" storyline. Give me straight up Eternia. Over all I'd say it was watchable, just not very often. I waited 23 years to see it again, and I can wait another 23 before my next viewing. On the other hand, my two year-old loved it. .

I remember not hating it when I saw it for the first and only time in theaters (on my 10th Birthday with a bunch of my friends).
I recall thinking Skeletor was awesome, and being really ticked off that He-Man barely did anything. I'd been getting some old "fan" magazine for MotU and it had been hyping up the movie big-time, so the finished product...was definitely a bit of a letdown. And yeah, the Gwildor/Lack of Orko thing both confused and annoyed me, as did the lack of the Prince Adam identity. I might check it out again someday soon, but the whole "Trip to Earth" and "Cosmic Key" things totally make sense once you find out this was actually a "New Gods" script that was tweaked to become "Masters of the Universe." You can almost see exactly who each character was originally supposed to be. |

Normally I have a soft spot for Golan Globus movies, but this isn't really one of 'em. I do know in He-Man lore that Adam's mother Marlena was an Earthling who stumbled upon Eternia in her travels and ended up falling in love with King Randor and marrying him. So that part with Etheria and Earth being connected doesn't sound too far fetched.
But I would rather see a true-to-the-series version...and if it had the Isis-looking version of Sorceress in it, I'd be very happy.

The movie makes more sense if you understand that the director never intended to do a straight up He-man adaptation but Highjacked it to be a Jack Kirby tribute film. So think of Skeletor as Darksied, The Sorceress as High Father and Gwildor as Metron (creating the Boom Tube) and it makes a lot more sense.
I love this movie.

If any of you guys are interested, the 1987 Masters of the Universe movie is available for viewing online!
Masters Of The Universe (1987) - Stagevu: Your View I enjoyed the Eternia scenes and it opens pretty strong with Skeletor taking Castle Grayskull and the Sorceress imprisoned! Once they came to earth, it is very cheesy. I do like the evil movie character, Blade. The bald dude with the eyepatch, even though his figure sucked. His movie design is cool looking!
