UPDATE: Peter Jackson in Final Negotiations to Direct Hobbit : Crimson Monkey
Looks like Peter Jackson will in fact direct the hobbit. He originally said he would rather not unless he could not find anyone he could trust. I'm very happy to hear this news. |

I've been hoping for this since we first saw hints of how amazing Jackson was making LotR. Can't wait for this one even though its going to be a long time before we get it.

I would have been happy with Del Toro doing it.
But only Del Toro and without him, it has to be Jackson.

Poor Jackson. Good for us but probably exhausting
for him. The guy managed to pull off three epic films only a year apart each with very little negative feedback from book fans and film goers... The guy has to be just plum exhausted. But still.... Good for us.

Del Toro was going to direct, but the studio is still in an unpredictable state. There were to start filming, but kept putting it off. Del Toro has lost out on a few other films because of the delays. I know Jackson really wanted Del Toro to direct...having Jackson return is the next best thing.

1) The movies never really explained that the Numenor (and thus Aragorn) were not humans, but in fact half-elven. So, it was extremely important that Faramir never fall to the temptation of the One Ring, since Middle-Earth was soon to pass to Man. It shows the reader/viewer that there are good Men, and Middle-Earth will not perish in the coming age. 2) The scene where Boromir is dying, and calls Aragorn "his King" should never have happened. The whole reason Boromir had to die in the books was because he NEVER would have accepted Aragorn as king. It was the same reason Denethor had to die. 3) I'll combine Merry and Pippin on this one. The movies made Merry and Pippin out to be nothing more than tag-a-longs, and trouble makers until the very end. When in actuality they conspired with Sam from the beginning to follow Frodo and protect him out of their love for him. Merry and Pippin (as well as Sam) were BAMF in the books. I am in no way trying to start an argument, and I am indeed looking forward to The Hobbit. I just wanted to vent yet again, since my wife is sick to death of it and stopped listening years ago. |

It annoys the crap out of my wife whenever I talk about this, but it always bothered me that more people weren't upset about the changes to Faramir/Boromir/Merry/Pippin. To elaborate:

Boromir's characterization in the movie was brilliant and moving. An absolute highlight. Boromir's end in the movie might be the one change I found superior to the novel. As far as saying Denethor would never agree...wrong. Denethor, after being corrupted by the Palantir, perhaps, but I recall the Denethor, in one of Faramir's flashbacks, when asked by Boromir when the Stewards could replace the Kings, answering that if the Stewards should reign for 10,000 more years they would never replace the Kings Gondor once had. This, to me, demonstrates a level of serious respect on Denethor's part. 3. While the movie did show them as tag-alongs in the beginning, rather than conspirators (and simultaneously cut out Fatty Bolger, the Forgotten Hobbit hero, entirely) they certainly DID demonstrate the requisite character development and bad-assery by the end. Not trying to start an argument either; LOTR is my favorite novel AND film. After many many re-watchings and re-readings, I find the only part of the adaptation that still bothers me, at all, is Faramir's mischaracterization.
