I just watched Top Gun for like the umpteenth time when it aired on AMC and I was just wondering how realistic it was. LOL. I mean if someone asked me the same question about Days of Thunder I could tell them almost everything that was wrong with that movie because I am kind of a Nascar buff. But I don't really know crap about jets. LOL.
I mean I know that scene where Maverick flies inverted right above the MIG and gives them the finger is total crap... but I mean other stuff. Is the Missile Lock thing even real? And if you get a Missile Lock is it like 100% you will get the kill? And if so, why would you ever fire a Missile without getting the Lock first? And in the movie all the dogfighting planes were like... kind of really close together when they were all flying around. LOL. Maybe it would have been easier to ask, "Was there anything in Top Gun that was realistic?" LOL. |

The aerial cinematography of Top Gun is real. So when the planes were flying "kind of really close together", they really were. The only time they used models was when planes blew up or was crashing (the scene where Maverick and Goose's F-14 went into a flat spin and Goose got killed was a model).
In fact if you watch Mythbusters, two models that were used in the movie (an F-14 and an F-5/ MiG-28) are displayed on the Mythbusters' wall. Also the Defense Department actually allowed one missile firing for the movie (they fired a Sidewinder). The scene was used multiple times using different camera angles.

Yeah, this was the first time, I believe, the DoD allowed a film to have this much access. And yes, Val Kilmer and Tom Cruise did play volleyball in cut-off jean shorts. Sorry, though, Tom Skerrit isn't that much of a badass.

You don't get to break safety rules that often an still fly. Top Gun is a school not a contest. There is no Top Gun trophy. When you're done you go back to your unit to teach them what you learned. Very unlikely that all four catapults are going to break down at the same time. You'd also have more that two planes in the air already. Iceman would have been shot down by the time Maverick got there. He should have gone full throttle and got the heck out of Dodge.

Days of Thunder was real as well as there is usually only 2 racers competing during the race while the others are there to get in the way and crash. And rubbing is racing.
The only unrealistic part of Top Gun is the inverted dive with the Mig and the mere suggestion that short-@ss Tom Cruise could spike a volleyball over the net.

When the crisis at the end arose, the aircraft carrier would have already had a squadron on board to handle it. They wouldn't have called the guys in the middle of their Top Gun graduation, and they definately wouldn't have requested Maverick after he displayed problems engaging in a fight.
Singing "You Lost That Love and Feeling" in a bar doesn't work, and following girls into the restroom doesn't work either. It either gets you kicked out and/or arrested. If you say things like, "I feel the need for speed," people don't think it's cool, and if you get up really close in somebody's face and bite your teeth at them, they'll probably punch you.

On a side note... despite his inability to spike a ball, Tom was the only one who played a pilot who was actually short enough to be one (there are height limits because of the cramped cockpit). Also, when riding in an elevator everything does not become blue (although if you've read the "interesting facts" on Top Gun you already know that scene was added later and McGinnis had already dyed her hair for another role {Kelly's and Tom's hair were both longer in that scene as well} so they were trying to hide it).

In one scene, one of the officers on the carrier is trying to talk to the aircraft... He's talking into a piece of equipment i used to work on... It wasn't a radio...

this was a great movie and falls into that category of "if its ever re-made it will be too soon" though studios have tried repeatedly to recreate what that movie accomplished
as far as realism there wasn't too much that COULDNT be possible...however almost all of it is not allowed and warrants extreme consequences if it does (busting the tower is a no no...also the hard deck if its set at 10k...instructors would NOT go below it to bait students into breaking the rule...and goose couldn't make it as a truck driver) |
