Yeah I have this movie, I think if you like this movie should also check out the Unit, David Mamet is also involved in that show as well. They just started showing reruns of it on Spike.

Yeah, I have all 4 seasons on DVD. The UNIT is pretty good, but I think Spartan is WAY better. For one thing, there are no wives to get in the way of the story.

"Spartan" is possibly the most serious espionage films I've ever seen.
Perhaps DeNiro's "Ronin" could give it a run for it's money, but it's really tough to beat "Spartan". David Mamet is known for writing dialog, and this movie delivers. I quote this movie all the time - perhaps not as much as "Tombstone", but it's close. The action sequences were designed by Eric Haney - former CSM of Delta Force - it's the real deal. the unit is seriously amazing too. sucks that they cancelled it before it could really tie up all the storylines. |

did you know that mamet wrote ronin under the name 'richard weisz'? pretty cool. both movies are awesome. and spartan has cool small roles from ed o'neill & kristen bell.
the unit is seriously amazing too. sucks that they canceled it before it could really tie up all the story lines. Yeah, Ed O'Neil is awesome in Spartan. He's so hard core. When he sees Val Kilmer's character, and someone has to tell him who Kilmer is... O'Neil is like, "WHAT CAN YOU DO FOR ME? I NEED TO KNOW RIGHT NOW!" Awesome. I liked the Unit, but all the subplots about what the wives were doing really got on my nerves. If the show had been strictly about the guys, I would have enjoyed it a lot more. The wives were annoying. Also the whole storyline about the Colonel sleeping with Tiffy was stupid. That got on my nerves too. And to be honest, I think it was miscast. Dennis Haysbert should have been playing the Colonel. He wasn't convincing to me as a SGM.Robert Patrick was fine, and if he were about 10 years younger, he could have played the SGM, but he wasn't great as the Colonel. I also wasn't crazy about Michael Irby's character, "Charles Grey". The last season was just crazy - beyond the pale of realism. I read Haney's book, "Inside Delta Force" and he doesn't like Officers. I think The UNIT really showed that prejudice.

REALLY??!!! Mamet wrote Ronin under a pseudonym? That's awesome. I wonder why he didn't just use his own name?

Spartan is a great movie, and I pass on my dvd to spread the word as much as possible. I love the master/pupil angle, and it reminds me that there is a way to write a Batman/Robin dynamic that is believable and not homoerotic. Some of the dialogue really stayed in my head for a long time, especially when Scott talks with his junior (it works in the context of the scene):
"In the city, always a reflection. In the woods, always a sound." "What about the desert?" "You don't wanna go in the desert." The dialogue about teaching knife-fighting was great, too. If you liked Spartan, check out a recent Mamet movie about a martial arts instructor and the MMA world, called Red Belt. Last edited by ohthree; 04-17-2010 at 07:41 PM.. |
