Many actors have played the legendary detective, but only 3 stood out the most. So who's the best Sherlock Holmes?
Basil Rathbone: One of the first to portray Sherlock Holmes during 1939 to 1946. The one who made the deerstalker hat and the curved pipe famous. Jeremy Brett: Considered as the most definitive Sherlock Holmes, the one who portrayed him in the TV Series based on the stories from 1984 to 1994. Robert Downey Jr.: The most cynical Sherlock Holmes who portrayed him recently. His portrayal was unique in a good way, and his was the roughest and less classy showing his Martial abilities. Pick more than one if you can't decide.

Robert Downey jr.
I've always had a love hate relationship with the franchise. I love the concept and the stories are well written, but Holmes is always portrayed as the most boring man on Earth. I Put off seeing the new film for this reason. Downey actually made Holmes interesting and believable. |

I prefered Peter Cushing, but as he was not on your list, I picked Basil Rathbone.

Actually, my favorite is Robert Downey Jr., due to his uniqueness. But in terms of traditional portrayals, I prefer Jeremy Brett.

The Downey Jr. Character wasn't Holmes... he was Holmes for the Spike TV, Manswers crowd...
Brett all the way... I can't get into RDJ's version.

No Richard Roxburgh? He only played the role once, though. :( I would've liked to see it again but he was replaced in the next one by Rupert Everett. (Really? :/ )
