I love The Wire. I think the element that I love the most about it is that the show creators and writers intrinsically trust their audience. They aren't hitting us over the head with tons of expository banter. They throw us right into the deep end and believe in our capability to learn to swim.
The first time I watched The Wire I watched the first episode and thought, "Holy crap. I have no idea what's going on, but I know I need to see more." And watching the show on DVD is a fantastic way to view the series - not having to wait for a week for the next episode is amazing. I need to rewatch the show again. It's been a while, but I think I'm ready to dive into that world again. |

I'm gonna rewatch it from the start.
Starting tomorrow. If you've never seen it be it you're skeptical or just haven't gotten to it... I rate it up there with the following television shows: Sopranos John From Cincinnati Curb Your Enthusiasm Firefly Arrested Development Millennium These are in my opinion (The Wire included) the 7 greatest television shows of all time. The Wire takes actors and non-actors... and pushes them into some of the most well written anything there's ever been. If you watch it raw... without any research or special features... all five seasons... and then watch the special features...commentary/behind the scenes et'al... it'll blow your mind who was an actor and who was a non-actor. Anyways... I've seen the whole thing once and always wanted to sit through it again. Last edited by Joseph; 04-16-2010 at 02:41 AM.. |

yeah but if that's what you're going to get on a show... at least it was well directed, well acted, and well written. not to mention unlike anything that's ever been put on television. it never tried to be epic. no character was safe. and it really did pave the way for better television writing.

That's such a classic, bad ass scene.
The Wire was an excellent series. I was amazed that the Felicia (Snoop) character was a non-actor; the part helped change her life around. I regularly watch Homicide: Life On The Street on dvd. Also an excellent series. |

Bumping this thread because I'm a little over half way through Season 2 and this series blows my mind how good it is. I'm not a big fan of TV mostly because it's not worth my time to invest in a "one and done" show (the rare exception is House, but even that show has themes that continue throughut the season). When the genre can be used to tell a larger story where each episode and each season is building on each other, then it is well worth my attention.
I haven't found a weak spot in the writing or acting yet. I can't believe it's taken me this long to catch up with the show. Favorite moment: Every time Bubs says McNulty's name. Sound like "McNutty". Makes me smile every time. |

The Wire is nothing short of brilliant; IMHO, it's one of the top 5 TV shows of all time. I never saw it on it's original broadcast, but did catch the entire series on DVD several times in the 200X's & early 20XX's. I liked that the series didn't try to solve the world's problems and/or wrap everything up in a neat bow at the end, but instead presented things realistically.
Each individual season was excellent in it's own way. Though most of the attention is paid to the first couple of seasons, the later seasons were solid as well. The season focusing on the school system was fantastic - it was a realistic, harsh look at the kids that were living in that environment. I also liked the one focusing on the newspaper; when this came out, it was very topical because print as a medium had already started dying to some extent - something that is happening even more so now. And, the magazines/newspapers that are left these days are sometimes a fraction of their former size. I grew up, went to college, and also worked in the Baltimore City area in the '80's & through the mid-'90's. And, The Wire truly captures the whole feel/vibe of this area, right down to the attitudes, accents, etc. Obviously the show is filmed in Baltimore & features a lot of locals as non-professional actors - which adds to the authenticity. And, rarely have I watched a show and actually felt like I was right in that area when watching this - but that's definitely the case with this series. Wow. When I was originally watching the show years ago, I did not know that both Dominic West (McNulty) and Idris Elba (Stringer Bell) were UK actors. They both pulled off the B-more accent very well, to the point that if I hadn't known better - I would have thought they were both locals. I have had the Blu-ray set since early 2016, but just started watching this. Wow! What an amazing experience - though the show was great before, watching it in Anamorphic Widescreen is like seeing the series for the first time ever - amazing. This WS format really opens up the picture, and makes everything much more "cinematic" - for lack of a better term. Also, the Picture Quality is obviously a huge improvement over DVDs. I will post more as I make my way through the Blu set. |
