great post, i threw in some opinions on your list.
these ones, no: Quote:
Apocalypse Now: Redux - See to me, that version was horrible compared to the original. Just to aimless and wandery ~ i thought it hurt the film more then the SW: Special Editions did (while adding nothing). it actually ruined the movie for me.
Commando ~ too much 80s cheese. The Shining ~ i didn't see the Shining until i was an adult, and i'd scene it parodied and homaged so many times that it just seemed kind of played to me. Plus, buy this point Jack Nicholson has become almost a self-caricature, so he wasn't frightening in the least. I'm sure if I'd seen it closer to it's release it would have had much more impact. these all ALMOST make the cut for me, but not quite. Quote:
you did pretty darn good job: Quote:
Ghostbusters
Aliens Rambo: First Blood Empire Strikes Back (theatrical release) - I don't really think the Special Edition mucked with TESB much ~ the new Wampa scene was an improvement and the extend fly into Bespin was nice Jaws Raiders of the Lost Ark Ferris Buhler's Day Off

By referring to it as A New Hope, you are talking about an altered version. The original version has the main logo followed by the opening scroll which does not include "Episode IV: A New Hope" as seen on the individual DVD releases taken from the laser disc editions and here:
...but I know that you mean the Special Editions of the OT where Han shoots first and has little to no regard of stepping on Jabba's tail, and Sarlaacs have beaks, and your force ghost reverts to the age you were when you died/went to the dark side... |

Toy Story 1 & 2 of course. Even the Pixar films that I don't like as much as those, I'd have trouble thinking of what to change.
Army of Darkness - my only complaint when I saw this in the theaters was that its so short. I really like Shaun of the Dead. It seems like every single line, scene or background character towards the beginning is addressed again once all hell breaks loose. Its funny, but also a bit honest in its portayal of a zombie breakout. Empire strikes back is the perfect Star Wars film to me. It had the budget to be even more convincing than Star Wars and didnt have the rushed feeling or silliness of RotJ. Even the special edition is good, it basically just cleaned up effects and was more subtle. Raiders is perfect, naturally. |

I'm a big naysayer of the "Special Editions" Empire really wasn't that bad but ANH was just really, really bad. Greedo shooting first totally alters the character of Han Solo and the whole Jabba scene was just a waste of digital bits. I also prefer the original effects shots during the death star battle. They are WAY more impressive to me than the computer effects. Another thing, you can totally tell which shots are CG and which are not. Very distracting. In my wildest hopes for the SW blu-ray discs, I am praying that Lucas will release the original cuts with the original effects in Blu-Ray all nice and cleaned up. A man can hope can't he.

A few of those already mentioned (Braveheart in particular, as well as a few others), as well as:
-Memento -Usual Suspects -The Man from Snowy River -Up (and frankly, most of Pixar's movies) -No Country for Old Men (I'll caveat this by saying I read the book first, so some of the character development probably carried over for me.) -Boondock Saints -District B13 -Kiss of the Dragon -Hero And a controversial choice... King Arthur, the unrated cut. Don't ask me why, I just really, really enjoyed that movie. I realize it wasn't really that great, there were weird plot holes, etc. I still really liked it.
