ok, I just streamed it yesterday and seen it for the first time. Even tough the quality wasnt excellent, I could still have a good idea. Yeah the effects are good, I'll admit, but seriously, does it really justify all the hype. I mean, it was a good movie, but not that insane! people killing themselves, being depressed and record breaking sales....I just wasnt that impressed. Anyone else?

You have to see it in 3D to fully appreciate the advances made in computer-generated imagery and special effects in that film, I guess.
The story is horribly banal though, just one cliché after another. The best description I've heard is that it's basically a very bad remake of "Dances With Wolves" set in space |

I dunno that I'd call it a "very bad" remake. It's an average-to-decent film as far as story and acting goes, it's just not very original in terms of its' overall themes and plot points.
The FX, as noted, are spectacular, so yeah...a halfway decent film with superb FX isn't too surprising to see do pretty well at the box office. I mean, it was about 10 thousand times better than Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and that movie made like $400 million in the US. |

I agree, It was good, but suffered LOTR syndrome, just a bit too slow and boring at times.

Avatar is one of those movie I think I'll vow never to watch. I made that vow for all twighlight and harry potter movies as well.

Ah, "very bad" might be too strong of a phrase, I suppose. I guess my largely negative reaction to Avatar's plot and story was informed by my pre-existing bias against Dances With Wolves (said film being emblematic of the "white man without a cross" phenomena in American literature and media... the recent Last Samurai starring Tom Cruise is another example).

I've never seen "Dances with Wolves", "Pocahontas" or "Ferngully". I have a hard time believing I would like any of those more than Avatar. To be honest the only thing I didn't like about the film was the unobtainium (had to cringe at that). It kept my interest the whole time. The only other long playing movies that held my interest like that were "The Fugitive" and "The Rock". Aside from the special effects, I think the actors performances were top notch.
