Proposed live-action film
On September 7, 2007, the Hollywood Reporter stated that Warner Bros. had acquired the film rights to Robotech and would be producing a live-action film with an as-yet-unknown release date.[8] Tobey Maguire is producing the film through his Maguire Entertainment banner and is pursuing the lead role in what the studio plans on being a tentpole sci-fi franchise. We are very excited to bring Robotech to the big screen. There is a rich mythology that will be a great foundation for a sophisticated, smart and entertaining film. —Tobey Maguire , [8] In an interview,[9] Harmony Gold representative Kevin McKeever said that Warner Brothers had approached Harmony Gold about the project, that Harmony Gold would have "a say" in its creative direction, and that it was not expected to affect the production schedule for Shadow Rising. He was unable to confirm any details of budget, casting, expected release date, or storyline, explaining that it was too early in the life of the project for these things to have been decided. In June 2008, it was reported that Lawrence Kasdan (Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Empire Strikes Back, and The Bodyguard) had been hired to write the film, with Charles Roven (Afro Samurai, Get Smart, The Dark Knight) and Akiva Goldsman joining Tobey Maguire as producers.[10] During the Robotech Panel at Anime Expo 2008, the involvement of Tobey Maguire and Lawrence Kasdan was confirmed, with Kasdan writing the script for the live action movie. Tommy Yune also revealed that the movie is planned as a re-imagining of the original Robotech universe (with new updated mecha and character designs) and will take place several years in the future, departing from the original cartoon's 2009 setting. [11] As of November 2008, Alfred Gough and Miles Millar (who both worked in Smallville, Spider-Man 2, Herbie: Fully Loaded, and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor) are the set writers for the film.[12] Due to undisclosed reasons producer Charles Roven is currently no longer working on the proposed film adaptation of the Robotech animated series. Roven also announced that he wishes the remaining producers, Akiva Goldsman and Tobey Maguire, "fantastic luck" on the project.[13] The Mania.com website reported recently that British television writer and novelist Tom Rob Smith "has taken over writing duties" for the proposed film adaptation of the Robotech animated series. Smith wrote for the British soaps Family Affairs and Bad Girls before writing a critically acclaimed crime suspense novel called Child 44. Smith will be the fourth writer or writing team to be reportedly attached to the upcoming film's pre-production.[14] Now, this news isn't new. I've read about this for sometime, and there hasn't been anything new about it lately. As soon as anything comes up, I will post or you can as well. The scale of something like this will be huge! I actually pulled this from wikipedia, but the resources come from various of sources. This is ligitimate news, it's just in the very early stages. Anyway, enjoy. Not going to happen in any kind of fashion you guys would like. Harmony Gold does not own the intellectual property rights to Macross. Legally, they can only make video games, sell toys, et al, and any company outside of Japan that wants to sell their Macross toys here HAS to go through them.
However the likenesses, characters, et al, fall under intellectual property rights and Harmony Gold, while they might be able to use a Rick Hunter in a live action Robotech movie, he can't look anything LIKE Rick Hunter did. The Veritech from Macross(VF-1 Valkyrie in japan), in the live action movie CAN'T LOOK like the original. This is the primary reason why they are going for a reimagination. It will be even far more removed than the 1st live action Transformers film was to Transformers. Imagine, Hasbro OWNS the intellectual property rights to Transformers and the live action movie had designs that were very different from what we are used to. Imagine the Robotech live action movie where the NOTHING can look like the original. |

I don't care if the Mecha don't look the same so long as they keep the story. That's what made Robotech stand out in my childhood. Transformers sucks because it needlessly distorted the character designs and then created a crappy story. If Robotech can keep the ideas in tact, then it will be a good movie. The source material is ripe for film.

Dated? The mecha look awesome, still do today. I've seen ALL of the variable fighters. VF-1 is still awesome. That design broke the mold for transforming vehicles, though it's impact is recognized more in Japan than here.

I'm not sure they wouldn't be able to make a deal with the Japanese holding company to get the rights if they wanted them. In all reality, not sure how much of a "Robotech" movie you could make in one movie. The epic of Macross/Robotech was so incredible, you could never do it justice in 2 to 3 hours. You could "possibly" do it in 3 movies, cutting out parts that didn't help the story along (not sure what I would cut out since the little moments were some of the best) but if Peter Jackson can make the Lord of the Rings in 9 hours, it is possible to capture Robotech. If you stick to the story of Robotech, you can't go very wrong. (This is something TF/Gi Joe producers should learn!)

Good lord, imagine a giant SDF-1 on screen. Someone needs to park a large truck full of cash in front of HG's offices to make this happen. |
