I was looking up old cartoons to watch how they ended. When I found The Pirates of Dark Water episode 21. I loved the cartoon as a kid. I always wonder how it ended, but guess I will never know. That got me wondering what other cartoons that never finished the story. All 21 episodes are here http://darkwaterpirate.com/

Good thread idea: stories that weren't finished!
Spectacular Spider-Man is cancelled, it was surprisingly well done with continuing story arcs. I don't think it ended as suddenly as Dark Water of course, but I think there may have been some unresolved set-ups and romances. That's the problem with continuing dramas, they've got to resolve at least something at the season's end, and treat every season finale as a potential series finale, but that's no fun. Dark Water was too ambitious for its own good I guess. |

And of course There was Megas XLR that got canceled... I liked taht show it was pretty cool.
Exosquad got cancelled before the start of a new storyline that ended the series on a cliffhanger.... |

The thing is, just about every network programming executive puts a "soft" maximum cap of 64 episodes for any animated series these days given the increasing costs of animation, unless the show is a huge runaway hit across such a wide demographic (i.e., SpongeBob Squarepants) that the cost becomes less of an issue (or at least that's what I remember the maximum is from an old Cartoon Network interview from a few years back). So you'd think that a show's writers and directors would plan their stories around that timeframe. Avatar: The Last Airbender, to me, is a good example of a creative team doing an excellent job of resolving all major plots and subplots by series end.

Avatar treating each season as a book is a great example to follow.
I don't like "one and done" episodes. I like there to be a plot to each episode but each episode is one piece of a whole.

lol, blast from the past. I totally forgot about that show, I'll have to check it out again.
The new MOTU cartoon didn't really end. They were all set to introduce the Horde, but didn't get around to it before it was cancelled. I remember being really disappointed when we didn't get another season of Exo-squad. That was an awesome show.

Dungeons and Dragons and Exo-Squad come to mind. Both are awesome series that never had resolution.
And Roughnecks. dangit, one more campaign and it would have been finished. |
