Saw lots of stuff this week (upon reluctantly accepting being too old to attend Spring Break). Unfortunately, as previously feared, I had already watched every major Academy Award nominee (ages ago). Except for "Another Round", which I'll be seeing shortly (and looks dreadful, btw).
"The Immortal Wars" (2017). Basically, the X-Men engage in Mortal Kombat while competing in The Hunger Games. Now, I know that plot may sound (somewhat) appealing. However, there are several things to keep in mind. First, the movie is "starring" Eric Roberts and Tom Sizemore. Wait. That's all you need to know, actually. "Schizoid" aka "The Scissoring"* (1980). Putting aside the rather questionable depiction of mental health concerns, a fairly standard slasher flick about an advice columnist who joins a therapy group to overcome her fear of being murdered by a maniac. On a scale of 0 to 10 (10 being the original "Halloween" and 0 being "The Gingerdead Man vs. Evil Bong"), this is maybe a 4. Plus I was shocked by how few people were killed (I only counted 3). Has to be a record low for this sorta film. "Beetlejuice" (1988). One of a handful of great movies Tim Burton made ("Ed Wood" and the two "Batman"s being the others**) before his "style" soon grew tedious. And while the entire cast is amazing, on a personal note, Catherine O'Hara so perfectly captures my mother's personality it's frightening. "DUST" (2019-). This is an ongoing series of short science fiction films currently streaming on various platforms. The good news is each one is typically very short (so even if you don't like them, at least they're over quickly). The only bad part is, as best I can tell, most of them don't make any sense. * Well, I would have called it that, anyway. ** Though "Pee-wee's Big Adventure" certainly had its moments.
