Spectre. Really dull for a Bond movie.

"Nomadland" (2021). Despite the dreary topic, nowhere near as depressing as you might expect, due to truly amazing work by director ChloƩ Zhao. However, while not the film's fault necessarily, both my mother* and I were reminded of several similarly themed movies we felt resonate more deeply: "Days of Heaven"/"Into the Wild" for me, "The Straight Story"/"Wendy and Lucy" for her.
"I Care a Lot" (2021). Rosamund Pike is very good, plus Peter Dinklage's presence is always a positive. I also appreciated how tasteless the plot was. Oh, but dat ending doe. Or should I say "endings"? I swear, the movie took forever to finally "wrap things up". * Not remotely relevant to anyone reading this, but I saw these with my mum. Felt it wasn't fair to the person I usually go with to force them to sit through films they would otherwise "avoid like the plague" (their words). Hopefully, that same person will take my act of compassion into account before attempting to make me watch basketball.

Okay, so I've now seen all 9 movies Variety predicts will be nominated for Best Picture. And I must say, God, I hope they're wrong. There's got to be a better option out there (there's just got to be). While none of these films is nearly as egregious as "Green Book" (literally the worst Best Picture ever), they pale in comparison to recent winners "Moonlight" (2016) or "Parasite" (2019). Or those that should have won in 2017 & 2018 ("Get Out" & "The Favourite"). For example, take the apparent front-runner, "Nomadland", which features some really beautiful landscapes ... but no, just no. (How's that for "in-depth criticism"!) Anyways, here's Variety's list (and how I personally rank them):
9) "News of the World" 8) "The Father" 7) "Sound of Metal" 6) "Nomadland" 5) "Judas and the Black Messiah" 4) "Minari" 3) "Promising Young Woman" 2) "One Night in Miami" 1) "The Trial of the Chicago 7" https://variety.com/feature/2021-osc...ns-1234768047/
