For personal reasons I'll avoid discussing here, when I got home Wednesday night, I was way too agitated to sleep. So, naturally, I did the only sensible thing, and watched "Congo" (1995). I've always loved Laura Linney ("You Can Count On Me" & "The Savages" are two of my favourite films*), so I said to myself, "Laura Linney AND a talking gorilla?! This movie must be amazing!"

Okay, basically, a billionaire needs rare African diamonds to build a laser (or a satellite or something). His son had located a cave full of them, but before the diamonds could be removed, he and his men get jumped by evil albino gorillas** (who look more like baboons to me, but I'll have to check with my mother***). So Laura Linney and a colourful crew of character actors are sent to retrieve the diamonds/rescue the son. Oh, and there's a good gorilla named Amy, who wears a glove which allows her to talk (somehow).

As you might imagine, there are numerous scenes of gory ape-related atrocities (plus a pretty cool volcanic eruption). What you may not have imagined is a scene where a gorilla drinks a martini. (Yes, that actually happens.) All in all, I quite liked "Congo". A very fun movie that doesn't take itself too seriously.

* And both involving idiot siblings who fight alot, ironically.

** I said jumped. Get your mind out of the gutter.

*** Because she's a wildlife photographer, not a baboon.
