Saw Wonder Woman. It was great. I have never heard an audience applauding in the middle of a movie before.

Wonder Woman was a success on many levels, giving a cinematically definitive origin to the character the way Superman, Iron Man, Captain America and to some extent Batman Begins did for their respective lead characters (and the way Spider-Man seems to fail to do more and more with each incarnation). Most important of all, Patty Jenkins showed how NOT to make an insipid Mary Sue character like Rey in Force Awakens. Wonder Woman is not constantly showing up the other characters by doing their jobs better than they do. Steve Trevor is just as competent and heroic, if not as powerful as she is. She saves lives but also has to have her life saved. Almost every major character in the movie argues with her and disagrees with her at various points, not just accepting her as some goddess whose word is gospel (even though that's what she actually is). She doesn't always know the right thing to do, and ends up questioning her own knowledge and beliefs at several points. This is how you create a character people can relate to, despite them being a superhuman. Giving her that sense of humanity is the movie's greatest achievement.
The movie is also hardly guilty of being some feminist trope. She doesn't treat men like a fish treats a bicycle. Far from being independent, she has a complete relationship with Steve Trevor that affects her deeply on every level. Listening to interviews with Patty Jenkins, Jenkins does not seem to be some far-left radical with a political agenda. Jenkins seems rather disinterested with politics and ideology and more interested in the basics of art and storytelling. She also has a distinct appreciation for the action-adventure films of the late '70s and '80s and was more interested in doing a throwback to that era than making a movie that felt trendy and modern. I think there are some slight weaknesses in the movie. It's easy to find other movies that out-do it in terms of special effects and action scenes. The movie gets a little dialogue-heavy at times which slows down the pace. The dialogue is almost always good, but does break into modern-sounding phrases at times that would not have been said in that time period ("let's stay on mission"). There are a few more side characters than we needed when we all know the movie is supposed to be about Diana and Steve. The plot structure is more linear than we're used to these days. Normally you aren't told in the beginning where the movie is going to end up and then steadily march in that prescribed direction, but that's basically what happens here. Except for the one obligatory twist which is the one part of the movie that felt truly in line with modern movie trends. But the ending is still one of the highlights of the movie when it happens. And the basic character of Wonder Woman and the storyline she drives forward provide the same kind of solid substance we've had in the best superhero origin stories. |

Covenant.
It was okay. Two of my favorite movies are Alien and Aliens so I'm picky. |

Wonder Woman. Best DC movie since Dark Knight and one of my top 5 non-MCU comic movies.
