I did enjoy "Live Free or Die Hard", or "Die Hard 4.0" over there. It had great action to it, and a really clever villain. And it was obviously John McClane. He was older, a bit more weary, but hardened. It was a bit over the top in some scenes, and a big departure from the original "Die Hard". It was more of a sequel to "Die Hard 2", while "Die Hard With a Vengeance" was more of a true sequel to "Die Hard" to me (if that makes any sense). But in all four of those movies, it was evident that Bruce was playing John McClane.
In "A Good Day to Die Hard", if you didn't hear his name, you wouldn't have any idea that it's a Die Hard film at all. If you've seen the trailer, you've seen all that you need to. The trailer was even better than the film, because it had some parts that weren't even in the movie! Bruce just walks around crashing cars, shooting guns and yelling "I'm on vacation!" every five minutes. If I had to compare him to any other character, it would be John Travolta in "From Paris With Love". Now, I liked that movie, but it had no history. It was just dumb fun. This isn't even fun. Even "Taken 2" was way better than this. I'll even say that "Taken 3" will be better, and I'm sure it will be awful. It's the type of movie that you could watch a bit of if you happened to catch it on tv, and you'd probably enjoy it. But you should not pay for it any way, shape or form. Bruce has really lost it lately. He's had about a half dozen movies go right to dvd. And this should have. I hope "G.I. Joe: Retaliation" is an exception to his recent history. because I enjoyed Die Hard 4 and thought Taken II was crap too. |

Horror Express
Absolute gem of a classic Spanish horror that any fan of the genre should track down and see... Some genuinely surprising twists when you see it for the first time.

The American - I appreciated this movie a lot more on this second viewing. The first time I watched it, I was a bit surprised at all the slow, deliberate shots and lack of dialogue. Now I like it because of that. I needed to watch something like this to cleanse my mind of "A Good Day to Die Hard".

Yeah, it could practically be a silent film. I think you need to be in the right mood to watch it. And know going in that it's not an action film. It was made to be sort of a modern-day spaghetti western. I like that it doesn't have any characters or actors that annoy me. It just makes me want to visit Italy someday even more.
