Watched Disney's Secretariat and it was shockingly pretty good. It thought it would suck, but it was really interesting and had some genuinely thrilling moments... especially the ending. Even though you know how it ends... it was pretty exhilarating nonetheless.

Let Me In
Splice Haven't seen the original or read the book yet but I really enjoyed Let Me In and this is coming from a guy who dislikes most vampire movies with the exception of the old Universal Dracula's and a few Sir. Christopher Lee Hammer films. Thought Splice was pretty boring though.

Tron Legacy
I don't get the mixed reviews at all. I think people have been waiting so long for a sequel that they just set their expectations too high. The story was at least as good as the first, and the visuals were immensely sexy. Seriously, everything in the digital world is impossibly cool and sexy, and the effect used to make Clu was pretty shocking. Having deliberately avoided spoilers, it was a pretty cool surprise. He's also the best kind of villain, the one who firmly believes what he's doing is right, and in a way, only what he was programed to. The elder Flynn even knows this and can only see his own failure in Clu's actions. At one point you can almost sense the realization on Clu's part that he's an imperfect creation futily trying to create perfection for a creator who no longer shares the vision he once had, but he can't accept it. Rinzler's identity was painfully obvious, but I'm not going to hold it too much against them for that. I just wish he'd gotten more screen-time. The revelation should've epic and meaningful, but he never steps up from being a side-character. His fate is also unsatisfying on its own, but sequel-bait if there ever was. I wish they could have wrapped it up more neatley. I will say that for the 5min he got to chew the scenery apart, Castor was fun as hell. Having his manic craziness was a great contrast to Clu's tragic subtlety. Also, seeing Jeff Bridges as this cross between Obi-Wan Kenobi and a hippy type character living in the digital wastelands suddenly shifting into "Lebowski Mode" ("You are... seriously... hurting my zen, man!") was awesome. Bridges acting is always a solid base for any movie, and the younger Flynn was also a decent job. I'm looking forward to seeing what else he does, as he's not the typical young movie hero actor. He's a bit grittier somehow and plays the bitter young recluse without making him into a whiny punk the character could have easily ended up as in lesser hands. The girl, I forget her name, is just agonizingly cute. Naive and powerful at the same time, she reminds me a bit of Jovovich's character in The 5th Element (but more subdued and better spoken). Also, Daft Punk pretty much owns this movie with their soundtrack. It's not John Williams or Basil Poledouris or Danny Elfman epic, but it's sticks. It's big and catchy and utterly alien when the action moves into the digital world and it completely works for every scene. It's evocative of the original's without actually sounding like an 80s synth-fest (at least partly because they seamlessly blended the electronic elements so well with the real orchestra) and never feels out of place with what is going on on-camera. Didn't mean for this to turn into a review, just my thoughts. So all in all, a pretty good movie. 4 out of 5. |
