To be fair, there are more hits, than misses, with the X movies. The original X-Men, X2, First Class, Days of Future Past, The Wolverine, Logan, Deadpool, and Deadpool 2 were all good.

I'm still bummed they mucked up one of the best X-Men villains Apocalypse. Nothing against Oscar Isaac, he's a good actor for sure, but he was horribly miscast in that role. Should have been someone who is much more brooding and someone with a much bigger physical stature (Apocalypse was supposed to be like 6'5" and all muscle). The makeup and costuming departments also messed up on Apocalypse just as much as the casting department did. He really should have looked like a robotic simian.

That sounds like a good idea, I wonder why no one did that before?

X-Men: Dark Phoenix
Where to begin with this film? First, the acting is universally terrible here. None of the actors seemed like they wanted to be in this film. James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender did their best, but seemed to be mostly bored and also probably felt like they were just rehashing the same stuff they'd been doing for four movies. Jennifer Lawrence also didn't want to be here and didn't even try. Her acting was terrible and she had that stupid "change the name to X-Women" line. Evan Peters tried, but they didn't use him much, choosing to injure him early in the film and sideline him for the rest. The rest of the cast were just terrible or forgettable. Sophie Turner is NOT a good actress and was miscast in this role. Jessica Chastain was bland as the villain, who was equally bland in the comics. Seriously... they set up Mr. Sinister in the post credits of the previous film and then didn't use him in this one??? They obviously already wasted Shaw and Emma Frost in First Class, so the Hellfire Club was out, but they could still have used Sinister and the Marauders and done an Inferno/Dark Phoenix mashup. Instead, they chose to use the D'bari... who pretty much NO ONE, outside diehard comic nerds, has heard of, or remembers. According to the Marvel Database, there are 17 TOTAL appearances of the D'bari across the entire breadth of the Marvel Universe. This could have been so much better. Originally, it was supposed to be two parts and also to involve the Shi'ar Empire, which would have been so much better. Jessica Chastain was originally supposed to play Lilandra, but got stuck playing a gender-swapped Vuk. They even talked about bringing back Emma Frost and the other members of the Hellfire Club. No Shaw would have sucked, but it would have been better than what we got. This was not only one of the worst comic films of all time, but one of the worst films, period, of all time.

Deadpool
Well, after one of the worst movies of all time, we get one of the best superhero films! Ryan Reynolds was made to play Deadpool and he does a fantastic job. Even the main villain, who isn't exactly Dr. Doom in terms of popularity, was decent. I especially enjoyed the Angel Dust vs. Colossus fight. And Negasonic Teenage Warhead is a great example of how you can create an entirely new, unique female character without having to gender swap an existing male one. Do more of that, Marvel. Stop with the Ironhearts and Captain Marvels and too many to count women with spider powers and do something more unique.

Hobbit Unexpected Journey Hobbit Desolation of Smaug X-Men 97 Ep 1 and 2 - the animation is great, but the dialog is so forced. |
