I think I may have mentioned this film in passing, but I rewatched it the other night, and I still can't get over what an incredible movie it is, especially considering it was done independently by a Scottish couple who mortgaged their home to raise the money to make it. Very professional, very good story, very good example of how well movies could be made, but typically aren't. Supposedly there's going to be a sequel, which will be interesting. Hopefully it doesn't disappoint.

The Ray Stevenson film?
Yeah, great movie. Plenty of atmosphere and some really good performances, but let down by a rubbish ending. Definately worth a look though. It's about a team of mercanaries hired to find an old experimental German bunker to retrieve 'something', but they find themselves surrounded and attacked by 'something sinister'. That's the "spoiler version"!!

A guy hires a team of mercenaries in an east europe country to help him find an old Nazi device (Die Glocke - although it is never named in the film), a thing that was sort of the equivalent of the US's supposed Philadelphia Experiment. The subject matter is stuff I find fascinating (although they don't explain too much in the film), but it's the way the film was done, in an understated way that classic horror movies used to be made, with less emphasis on the gore and more on atmosphere, which makes everything creepier. One of the worst devices utilized by nearly all horror films of the last 10 years is when there are clipped bursts of gory or creepy images punctuated with some loud noise or screams or whatever. it's basically like jumping out at someone in the dark and yelling "boo", which is pretty amateur, in my opinion. The really creepy, scary movies that get under your skin are the ones that don't show the parts that you should be afraid of. I guess that's why H.P. Lovecraft is one of my favorite writers - his style of storytelling was similar. You can't describe something indescribable; why try to show it in a film?
