For those who have lost track this is the watching order for the Mummy / Scorpion King franchise....
-Scorpion King 2: Rise of a Warrior -Scorpion King -Scorpion King 3: Path to Redemption -The Mummy -The Mummy Returns -The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor Which techinally makes SK3 a sequel of a sequel of a prequel to a sequel of a movie that actually was fun and made money....lol. Anyway despite mixed reviews of The Original Scorpion King I liked it the film it may not be the greatest action film ever made but for what it is its stull fun...maybe naming the main villian something not so close sounding to Numbnuts would have helped a bit but overall its a fun little action film. And I will even toss SOME credit to its lackluster direct to DVD sequel Scorpion King 2: Rise of the Warrior...it did what it could with what it had...its no where near as good as the original and I think cast pulled off a decent 'Early' adventure of the Scorpion King. SK3...is a direct sequel to the first SK movie so it still takes place before the Mummy movies, but in place of the Rock we have a very poor substitute Victor Webster....where both Rock and Webster could pull off the action scenes, Webster comes off as a bit too campy and forced cracking jokes in the film. And in fact any of the comedy in this film seems oddly places as the film seems to have an identity crisis deciding is it an action film with a few jokes tossed in or is it a flat out comedy? Aside from the previously mentioned faced comedy of the former Scorpion King (his kingdom fell between films and his Queen died) he is teamed with a wise cracking Norse guy who plays more like Ogre in Revenge of the Nerds 2 than a gruff lovable journey mate. And the villian Billy Zane seems more like a stand up comedian than a villian. As for the story...its so disjointed...as The Scorpion King and his associate are mercinaries sent by Ron Pearlman to help out the guy that played Jango Fett...no joke...defeat Billy Zane's forces....and by the way forget Ron Pearlman is in the film because he disappears until the damn end of the film, anyway they sorta lazily help Jango out of an attack...but they really don't seem to have too much thought behind it. Once they save him he's supposed to pay them gold but instead offers his daughters hand in marrage a deal they only take because in her oil painting of her she is wearing a mythic necklace.....but she was kidnapped by Billy Zane and.....you know what it all just keeps degrading into a bunch of fight scenes which really seem to have no real purpose including Ninjas and elephants toss in a girl that is the head of the Ninjas and turns out to be Jango's daughter as well...clearly they were trying to channel some of the felling from having Kelly Hu in the first film... Anyway the film really doesn't have much that makes sense happening until The Scorpion King teams with Jango's daughter. Finally something interesting happens when Billy Zane uses the magic necklace and the Book of the Dead....yes that book of the dead from the first Mummy film to release three dead ancient warriors to track down and kill The Scorpion King and company. Ironically casting FINALLY got something right as WWE's Dave Batista, UFC's Kimbo Slice and a cute Asian witch swords woman are unleashed. For those wondering Batista and Kimbo do little more than look menacing fight and grumble a few lines which they both did very well...oddly enough in all this terrible film, I did see one thing I think could be a good spin off from the franchise... Selina Lo played Tsukai the sorta Swords Witchwoman and she was pretty damn cool...an interesting character I would like to have seen more of. Any way it all leads to a fairly unimpressive showdown with Billy Zane and the Scorpion King becomes a leader once again. As films go...its pretty bad...in the franshise all together easily my least favorite. |

I keep seeing previews for this in movies rented recently.
What I find completely funny is that they say "starring: Ron Perlman, Billy Zan, Kimbo Slice and WWE's Dave Batista" But at no point do they ever say who is playing the Scorpion King. That is cool that they brought in the Book of the Dead, helping tie it all together. The first Scorpion King, never saw the first, was good. Not the greatest action movie ever, but it was entertaining. But what I never understood was that the Scorpion King in the Mummy movies (which I've always enjoyed except for Tomb Of The Dragon Emperor - Maria Bello is no Evie, it just didn't work without Rachel Weisz) was a bad guy. He was the head of an invading army and got cursed to become a giant scorpion monster. But the Scorpion King movies portray him as a good guy. Yes I know that the Scorpion King movie was only created to be used as a vehicle to propel the Rock to movie stardom, which worked, and that story was only secondary.

Your review makes me want to see the movie even more. I have it along with several other movies I borrowed from my uncle who buys just about every movie when they come out on DVD. I think I'll watch it tonight. Thanks for posting this review.

I tried watching this movie last night. Tried being the key word there. Between the flat acting of the main characters, the fight choreography that seemed liked it was made up on the spot and disjointed character and plot elements that were cobbled together this film tried it's hardest to have me stop watching and in the end it succeeded.

Watched it last night.
Overly complex and not in a good way. What was the point of having a resistance when the good king was still in control? Had some funny tongue-in-cheek moments. Over the top acting by Billy Zane.
