The writing was on the wall from the word go, the quirky underdog of a show about Sam Oliver having his sole sold out from under and becoming Satan's bounty hunter (think a slacker version of Ghostbusters) along with his friends is finally DEAD.
The show struggled through season 1 but had a loyal following that kept it alive for a second season, a season its parent network CW delayed airing for close to a year, after having moved the show from night to night and changed time slots like crazy during its first season. Season 2 finally aired in the CW's sacrifical time slot of 8-9pm on Tuesdays replacing the lagging New '90210' which even though its ratings are terrible the netwrok president LOVED the original '90210' and moved the show to a less competative slot leaving Reaper to fend up against American Idol. Reaper amazingly held its prior seaons ratings despite its bury slot is still being cancelled by CW, but CW is reorganizing and the CW president has decided that Melrose Place needs to be resurrected to accompany its new '90210', and CW is no longer going to have programming on the weekends. Oddly the weekends programming is being left to local affiliates who had expressed an interest in buying a third season of Reaper from producers ABC studios, which would keep the show alive and pair it with the syndicated show Legend of the Seeker. Last week local stations were told that Reaper was 90% a done deal to be sold to a cable channel Sci-Fi. Reports are that Sci-Fi had agreed to take on the show but would be slashing budget and production staff. When CW cancelled Reaper it nullified all contracts it had with the stars and creative. Co-star Tyler Labine (Bert 'Sock' Wysocki) had already been cast in a differant show Sons of Tuscon but had CW renewed Reaper he would have been contractually obligated to stay with Reaper. Something he states he was happy to do but relized where CW was headed with the show and took the Tuscon roll incase it fell through. When Sci-Fi spoke with star Bret Harrison and told him that since all their contracts were null and void and that Labine had signed to do Tuscon he was now LEGALLY obligated to do Tuscon, Sci-Fi refused to spend the cash to fight that obligation and wanted to continue Reaper minus 'Sock' arguably one of the fans favorite characters. At that point realizing he was no longer under contract Harrison pulled the plug on his return to the role of Sam Oliver. Facing the lose of the shows star, and a major co-star Sci-Fi briefly toyed with the idea of a fresh start with Reaper with an all new cast, Ray Wise the devil would be the only one rumored to return to torment an all new Reaper. After a week of no answer, co-star Tyler Labine massed emailed his fans on Facebook yesterday confirming what we all suspected Reaper was finished, him and Harrison were not returning and Sci-Fi channel would not be making a revamped version of the show. Co-star Jenny Wade (Nina the Demon) has also posted a video answer along the same lines on her twitter account, which is also on youtube...god she's hot...if I'm ever dying please have her give me the news it will definately breal easier looking at that sweet, sweet face. Tyler Labine has mentioned the possibility that a comic book continuation has been kicked around as well as an animated series, he would gladly lend his voice to. I'll leave this disection of the end of Reaper with some advice Jenny Wade gives in her video, go buy Reaper seasons 1 and 2 on DVD, nothing gets studios attention more than money...and find your friends that watched American Idol this season and punch them in the face for not having watched Reaper. Kind of a shame the show was actually funny. |
