70 million in it's opening weekend tells me that there are a lot of people out there who felt like wasting money this weekend. I wasn't one of them though so /shrug. I still say there is absolutely no reason to spend a dime on movies like this since they'll be out on DVD before Christmas.
Not everybody has that stuff at home (the big-screen TV/Surround Sound/etc...). Quote:

It's sad that the 'old' STAR TREK universe isn't "cool" or "exciting" enough that they have to change it so much. It's also frustrating to see that if I ever declare a preference for the original I'm still considered a 'nerd', whereas fans of the new film are 'cool'. DS9, ENTERPRISE and (to a lesser extent) VOYAGER produced some stunning television episodes during their runs, yet all get dismissed under the 'nerd' banner. I somehow doubt the new film will have anything near the depth, charisma or warmth of any of the previous iterations yet will get a 'free pass' simply because it's "cool" and (*shudder*) "sexy". People tend to forget that the various "Trek" series were watched by millions of people, and not all of them would consider themselves "trekkies" or "trekkers" or even anything more than casual fans of the series. You know...normal folks that have never once felt the urge to put on Spock-ears or a Starfleet uniform, attended a convention, or are particularly "nerds." I simply don't see this "backlash" that you seem to think exists, except against the extreme fringe of the fandom. I loved TOS, TNG, the second half of DS9 and most of Enterprise, I also loved the new film. There's nothing wrong with a reboot when it's done well, and this one's definitely done well. Quote:

From a "Hollywood" perspective the need for a drastic change was self-evident: Nemesis bombed in theaters and Enterprise fizzled on television screens. The Trek franchise as it existed was no longer drawing in the casual viewers/general audiences. Last edited by Jmacq1; 05-11-2009 at 11:17 AM.. |

I will wait until it hits the cheap theater, or even DVD. I am not a fanatic about ST (I have watched pretty much all of TOS, STNG, hated DS9 so obviously didn't watch a lot of it, never watched Voyager, liked Enterprise), but am not fired about about this at all.
Unlike Crimson Rage, I like the new Doctor Who and like the old. Like him, this just doesn't look like it has what I liked about the old Star Trek.

As far as the movie "feeling" like the old trek series...I would say it does...It is a very well done movie and a Very Well Done Trek Movie...It is an alternate timeline, so it steps on very few toes...It is a very good story and I think a few of the naysayers once they see it will realize it is much better than they want to believe.

If there was ever a franchise in need of a little refreshing, it's "Star Trek." Forty years (give or take) is a pretty good run. I've been a Trek fan pretty much since birth and I'll be the first to admit that the whole brand had gotten quite stale. I read a quote from Ron Moore last week where he talked about writing for TNG and DS9 back in the 90s and having to constantly double check to make sure something you'd written didn't contradict a plot point from 30 years ago. That has to be frustrating for a writer to come up with a good story only to find out you can't do it, or you have to alter it, to fit it into a pre-existing continuity. "Star Trek" was starting to crumble under its own weight.
I loved the new movie. The performances were great, the action was solid, it crammed alot of character development into its running time, and it took some nice risks. It's a new story but with enough affection for the mythology to not alienate an old fan like myself. A perfect balance, in my opinion. Just a great reboot. |

Same thing happened with DR WHO: Whenever I say I like the old series better, people who have just been raving about the latest version suddenly point and call me an 'anorak'.... can't argue with logic like that can I? It's glossy, it's slick and has great effects so it must be better... :( And just in case someone thinks I'm being hypocritical for supporting the changes to GI JOE while disliking them in STAR TREK, I honestly don't think they can be compared. TREK has only ever had ONE universe and it's main medium has been visual (television and films). JOE is more 'flexible' and has existed in many different forms with no one 'true' direction and so I accept that it should evolve when being adapted for the big screen for the first time. I do expect the TREK film to be a hit though, and we'll get a whole new series of movies with this cast. Great. If people love them then fine, I won't whine and insist the film be done "my way or not at all" - I'll just sigh at the passing of a 'long term friend' and stick to my extensive DVD collection. One final thought: It would be interesting to have all the people who rave about the new film watch some classic DS9 or ENTERPISE episodes and get their opinion of them. I suspect they'd still be dismissed as 'nerd fodder' and if so would pretty much prove that the new film is TREK in name only. That said, the new movie was great and I'd love to see more from this cast and director, and as samjjones said ....... |

I saw this movie 2 days ago, and although I have not seen any other ST movie this one really kicks ass.

I used to come home from school and watch The Next Generation with my dad. I was never a superfan of Star Trek, primarily because of its comparison relationship to Star Wars (which was way better before the prequels tarnished it). I still had a little interest in the classic Trek shows from time to time. I was excited to hear they were rebooting the franchise for a new generation.
I caught this movie last night and loved it. Not often do reimagining of classics do so well, but this one takes the cake. I can't wait to see more. |

Went back and saw it again with a buddy today. Keep your eyes peeled during the scene where you first see Scotty. You'll notice something in the cage near his desk.

just came across an interesting tidbit. shatner's cameo was actually scripted. spoilers...
in the scene with the 2 spocks chatting towards the end of the film the younger spock finds it hard to believe that he will end up being close friends with kirk. then the older spock states don't take my word for it and pulls out a hologram of the older kirk. kirk had sent this hologram before spock had left for the romulan home world because he thought he might not ever see spock again. due to the fact that spock might be away for a long time and his own advancing age he wanted to say happy birthday to spock for the last time. after viewing the message / hologram the younger spock finally gets it. then as you see kirk's promotion and then kirk and crew on the bridge you hear shatner doing the voice over ending the film. they were 50/50 on this but in the end decided not to film it. personally i think it would have been a great scene and i wish they had filmed it. |
