Anybody watching HBO's new crime drama?
What I like is it's not your usual police procedural and it's very reminiscent of Twin Peaks' best ''weird'' but without the absurdist surrealism. There are also shades of Folk Horror mixed with Seven and even a hefty dose of R.W. Chambers (an author of supernatural horror who served as one of Lovecraft's inspirations.) They also manage to balance the flashback/multiple time periods neatly, the performances are great and although the writing at times drifts into the realms of dime store pulp, it's great to see characters who aren't particularly nice being presented as the ''good guys.'' Anybody else watching?

Love the show. I'll catch up with Ep 6 tonight. Love where this is going.
Since I'm an ep behind, I don't know if this is still relevant but it's a good read. The One Literary Reference You Must Know to Appreciate |

I wanted to add it into the rotation but the girlfriend had no interest.

My wife wasn't that keen at first but I watched it and told her it was a cool show (a lot of her friends were watching, which probably helped) so now she's hooked, too.

there needs to be an award higher than an emmy for the work McConaughey is doing. and that writer is gonna get a blank check for whatever he wants to do next. |

M.R. James Hands-down the BEST writer of ghost stories. The atmosphere of his stuff builds so slowly and creepily that you don't even realize what's to come. Restrained and all the more terrifying for it. Don't be put off by his ''olde worlde'' writing style (he was active at the start of the 20th Century), as its well worth sticking with for the pay offs. H.P. Lovecraft The daddy of Cosmic Horror. His writing style can be a little florid at times and he does occasionally slip into casual racism (I won't try to excuse him except to say that (A) he was writing in a time when people were dicks like that and (B) he lead a pretty sheltered life in his early days and developed a form of xenophobia which he did later make some effort to correct) but the idea of a race of beings who aren't evil - they just don't care about us - marks his place among weird fiction fans. Robert Aickman Aickman's work is really difficult to find but well worth hunting down. It's difficult to really categorize, though. It's just ''weird.'' His stories don't tend to revolve around demons or murders or monsters. They're just about people kind of taking a wrong turn or going down the wrong road and ending up in skewed, unsettling versions of reality. He doesn't have those kind of ''and the inspector opened the door and found... five bodies!'' endings. Things just sort of amble on but afterward, everything is changed, leaving you with a sort of feeling of unease. Algernon Blackwood Another hugely influential yet almost forgotten author, Blackwood's work can - again - be difficult to find but it's worth tracking down. His short story, The Willows, is one of the best weird tales I've ever read. You'll be convinced you've seen the movie of it, so visual is his writing. And it's a perfect example of how the unseen and unknown can be far more frightening than anything you can see or know. Karl Edward Wagner His story ''Sticks'' was a huge influence on True Detective and The Blair Witch Project. Again, a great author in the field of the short story. Ambrose Bierce Another ''everybody knows him but you can't find his works'' author who wrote great short stories. Also disappeared and became a vampire (if you're to believe From Dusk Til Dawn 3...) If you can find it, pick up a copy of The Dark Descent. It's a three volume collection of short stories tracking the development of the form and based around three ''types'' of story. There are some fantastic authors in there and it's a great gateway into their work.
