Just saw it again with my daughter. I love the feel of the spider scene. Pure arachnophobia!!!
I counted 4 beheadings. Seemed like a lot more the first time. Can't wait for the last movie!!!!

For a movie called the Hobbit, seems Bilbo isn't in it a whole lot. Feels more like a Dwarf movie, lol.

I enjoyed it, but felt like they glossed over some of the best parts in the book (Beorn, the Spiders, etc.) for the made up stuff.
The elf/dwarf love was unnecessary, in particular. I liked Bard's bits a lot and Smaug was excellent. The greater emphasis on the Arkenstone was really well done. Overall, I still would have preferred a more modest take but I liked it for what it was.

While I enjoyed the movie, they should've just called it "The Hobbit: This Is The One With A Bunch of Stuff Not In the Books Because The Studio Wants More Money From This Franchise."
The only plus side is that most of the padding was probably in this film, and the next one should focus mostly on events from the last third of the book. And of course Elf-Girl is a dead woman walking, especially given who her pseudo-romance is with (on both sides of the triangle). I didn't mind it though, because like most of the additions Peter Jackson makes, it usually ends up making sense for the story in the end. Yeah, it's "Hollywooded up" at points, but in this movie (for example) they make our supposed heroes (Bilbo and the Dwarves) look far more heroic than they did in the book, and help more firmly establish the stakes for the Elves and the Men of Laketown in regards to what will be coming later. LEGO Hobbit Dolguldur Ambush 79011 - LEGO - Toys "R" Us Remember that the "made up stuff" has it's basis in the Appendicies of LOTR. I cannot get through them though. Too many foreign names to sort out. Some more thoughts: I heard in the AUJ commentary that they wanted to use the Silmarilian, but that is not licensed by New Line and WB. I think the next movie will start with the origin of Smaug and other Dragons, and how they are in league with Sauron.

I liked the opening scene at the prancing pony. I thought that we might see Strider in the background somewhere. Haha.
They made it too easy to find PJ this time. He wasn't as easy to find in AUJ. Did anyone notice that the Orc scout that told Azog to go see Sauron was Bolg? Just seemed weird that they showed him there, but then made it seem like he had his own introduction cameo when Azog told him to hunt down Thorin.

Don't get me wrong, I still rather enjoyed it all. I just enjoyed the book more. I guess, in the end, I was looking for a more toned down, "down to earth" sort of feel to the story... part of the same world of LotR but not trying to MIMIC it. Quote:

I don't have a problem with the Tolkien stuff, or even some of Peter Jackson's revisions... It makes a lot of sense for Legolas to be in the film, for example. However, his EXPANDED role seems forced. I don't mind a new female captain of the guard elf character - SOMEONE has to be the captain of the guard, right? But I don't need to see some kind of interracial dwarf-elf love story. I mean, come on... why? It's OKAY, just... unnecessary. Especially when they could have drawn out the spiders or something, which could have been AMAZING. Quote:

Anyway, to sum up - yes, I still liked the movies. But I was a bit disappointed... and more so in this one than the first. But Smaug makes up for it.

Well, that's cool, but not really what I meant. I really liked the way he was introduced in the book, what with the Dwarves coming up two by two and what not, and having the animals serve them food and all that. I was really looking forward to seeing how Jackson would pull that off in the film (having really enjoyed, on a similar note, the Dwarves tossing dishes around and singing at Bilbo's place), but instead we got a lame "here's another badass" kind of thing, and Beorn was played much too dark as well.
