Marvel Studios Creative Committee Disbands
https://movieweb.com/marvel-studios-...itte-disbands/ Just one day after the news that Marvel Studios' Kevin Feige will report directly to Disney, the studio has disbanded their Creative Committee. BY BRIAN GALLAGHER | September 2nd, 2015 Yesterday, we reported that there will be some big changes in store for Marvel Studios, with president Kevin Feige restructuring his deal so that he directly reports to Disney CEO Alan Horn. This allows Kevin Feige to avoid dealing with Marvel Entertainment CEO Isaac "Ike" Perlmutter, who has gained a reputation over the years for his thrifty ways. Today, Birth. Movies. Death confirms a report from Heroic Hollywood that Marvel Studios has now disbanded its Creative Committee. The Creative Committee would offer their input and notes on various Marvel superhero movie and TV productions as they moved through development. The Committee included Alan Fine, who came to Marvel with Isaac "Ike" Perlmutter after their stints at Toy Biz, Marvel Comics writer Brian Bendis who is a prolific Marvel Comics writer, Marvel Comics publisher Dan Buckley and Marvel Enterprises Chief Creative Officer Joe Quesada. There has been talk over the years that the Creative Committee was often the source of frustration for many filmmakers. The site reports that it was the Creative Committee's notes that lead Edgar Wright to part ways with Ant-Man, after being attached to the project for nearly a decade. It is also said that the Committee was often quite late with their input, which would draw out the development process even more, which isn't surprising given their other responsibilities, but it was still a point of contention for filmmakers trying to get their projects off the ground. One anonymous filmmaker revealed the Creative Committee's notes focused on "nit-picky science" details that didn't take into account the script's tone. The dissolution of the Creative Committee likely won't have any impact on Captain America: Civil War or the next Phase Three movie, Doctor Strange, which is already deep into pre-production. However, the projects that will come after, such as Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Thor: Ragnarok and Avengers: Infinity War Part I could look and/or feel much different. Key creative decisions will now be made by a trio of Marvel Studios executives, Kevin Feige, Louis D'Esposito and Victoria Alonso. This decision could also affect the merchandise side of Marvel as well. There are rumors that the reason there are no Black Widow toys is because Ike Perlmutter always believed that female toys didn't sell, and he constantly vetoed any Black Widow toys. As far as the movies go, it isn't known if Marvel Studios movies will get bigger budgets, or if they will pay their actors more, but we'll have to wait and see. What do you think about this news, and how do you think it will affect future movies? I don't whether this is good or bad. I'm assuming that Feige will still receive some input from Quesada, Loeb, and other people that are familiar the comics ends.

I'll take this as a wait and see. I can easily see how a committee like that could present issues on film and media development. I think a bigger concern might that, for all the fuss, Marvel movies have generally been fairly economical. Without some of this oversight, I think there becomes a SIGNIFICANT issue of budget bloat on projects, which can easily backfire (see Lone Ranger, most of WB's recent superhero films).
Hopefully, though, without this single committee, we might see the cartoon side of things improve to some real decent series again instead of watered down copies of the movies.

the creative commitee has nothing to do with budgets, it was about coordinating activity between the comics, games, cartoons, TV and movie divisions and a report a few days later said it's not been disbanded it simply won't be doing as much with the movies.

People seem to be either stroking the panic button or mashing it insanely over this news.....but they shouldn't be.
Its great news IMO that shows Disney's commitment to & belief in the MCU. Perlmutter was a bum who Feige, Whedon and others knocked heads with CONSTANTLY. I'm pretty sure this wont effect the direction of the movies at all.....now if Feige was removed? I would be worried but he wont be. Disney has had 3 billion $$ movies from Marvel and several others that have done exceedingly well. I heard this last week and was pretty happy about it then too. |

as far as i'm concerned it's great news if it was Perlmutter really was the one blocking female character merch, because 1. FFS, girls WANT to buy stuff and there ARE boys who will want the Widow toys if they're completists OR if they're not total nobbers and like the character and want a figure of her and 2. I was actually quite worried about how in the hells they would merchandise Captain Marvel when she's the female lead and Widow and Gamora were getting left out/off the merch for their movies.

Be interesting to see what changes, but I hope this doesn't mean Marvel goes the route of letting Directors and writers do whatever the heck they want on their films. Stylistic flourish is fine, but they should still feel like they all belong to the same universe, and should still do the excellent job of pragmatic adaptation that the Marvel films have been following (being as faithful as they can realistically be, and always careful to retain the core of the characters and their stories).
Then again, among "movie buffs" most (but not all) Marvel films are derided for being "generic" and not allowing directors to "make their own movies." The thing is...Feige handles the movies. Not sure how big his marketing role is...Ike may still have control over that stuff as Marvel's CEO. But yeah, glad Ike's out of the picture. He's one of Hollywood's most curmudgeonly curmudgeons. And by all accounts a miserly casual sexist as well. |
